Anybody here have anything to say about Winchester/Frederick County VA?

Looking at moving there maybe next summer or shortly thereafter. Originally from VA myself but much closer to DC. I've not really visited out there too often but it seems to be the size we are looking for. Thinking about either working remote from my current job but employment prospects locally up there don't look too bad. Seems like it has enough of the national amenities we're used to in bigger cities but still has some small town charm and good local businesses. Lots of historical museums and battlefields in the area too. Doesn't seem to be outrageously expensive and we could either live in town or have a little more space out in the surrounding county is still close enough to lots of good outdoor activities.
The city government just shifted in the last two elections from a long time conservative majority to a moderately liberal majority so that does give me great pause about actually living in the city proper. We're basically fleeing local progressive politics and crime right now in New Orleans.
If anybody has anything good or bad to say about the city and area I'd love to hear it.

That much I already know
but they all will be eventually. Tennessee North Carolina and Texas will soon follow so I’d rather get home and put roots down in my home state rather than just run to a state sure to fall in a few years anyway.

Very historic town and just off the interstate system. Several blocks of town are closed off for pedestrians only and area has cobblestone/brick streets. Nice architecture. Music, pubs, and decent food. George Washington was there pre revolutionary war doing surveying of the then West. Headquarters for a time in the Civil War for Stonewall Jackson. Both will probably be cancelled by the time you move in.

Winchester is pretty nice. It's more rural and the cost of living is pretty low. I'd hardly call it liberal but honestly who really gives a frick about that when choosing a place to live. Close to the mountains and the App Trail so if you like that kind of thing it's great.

The county just this past year signed a 200 year deal with a historical society to preserve the towns civil war museum and soldiers memorial. Looks like the county has control over that and not the city. Interesting.

The absolutely horrendous state of liberal areas who refuse to prosecute crime is why I pay extremely close attention to the politics of where I live. I don’t want to live somewhere where the government throws its hands up and gives the city to the mob. And I certainly don’t want to live somewhere who attacks the people who try and protect themselves from said mob.

Furthermore, Winchester is in no way a progressive town. There are plenty of hillbilly cousin fricking Trump voters

Trust me I’m from Arlington I’m well aware. But these types of things that I’m bothered by aren’t just locked into places typically rife with incompetence. Even Arlington is starting to go soft on crime and is seeing upticks.

The commonwealths attorney ran on a platform of ignoring lower level offenses and eliminating cash bail among other things. So that’s what I mean by soft on crime. Making it less punishing to.......commit crime.

I got my Master's from Shenandoah University in Winchester 20+ years ago so this may now all be out-of-date. It's a crappy little liberal arts university but it's added D-III football recently so that's something.
Winchester is a nice town and there are nice towns surrounding it- Leesburg to the south get pricey. The high school in Winchester looks better than the college; it was endowed by a local and looks very nice. Not much was happening there for singles 20+ years ago but it looks like a great place to raise a family. I'd move back...

I've only driven through Winchester, and the thing I remember was most of the houses were designed in Federal House architecture, which looks like shite imo.

I did notice that about the surrounding towns. They all actually seem to have pretty charming main streets and local options. One has a drive in theater. Seems very charming. And the school is beautiful. Probably one of the prettiest high schools I’ve ever seen in America.
ETA and not having a ton of young people is a bonus. Good to know.

I lived further South in Roanoke but assumed that whole I-81 corridor was guns and Jesus territory. It definitely is further down. Where will you be moving from?
My take- I feel like no matter where you live, you're going to spend 90% of your time inside a certain radius from your house, call it your bubble. Our bubble was really solid, low stress, no traffic, people were friendly, beautiful country, great outdoors, hiking, mtn biking, etc... Just enough restaurants and other amenities to have everything that you need. I assume Winchester is similar.
That said, every now and then, you need to get away for a long weekend to go to some better restaurants go to a concert, or whatever. We only had a regional airport that required connecting and made travel difficult. I think the difference maker for Winchester is that it would only be an hour drive from Dulles where you can fly direct to almost anywhere. If you're looking for a city that size, proximity to a major airport is a good thing to have. Just my $.02.

It has an incredible Civil War history there. Patton’s grandfather was a colonel in the Confederacy and was killed at the Third Winchester Battle.

You need to either flee further west across the WV state lines, or further south past Charlottesville.
