If you were to ask a ER doc if he'd rather work on person with a wound from a gunshot or a wound from a knife with no other context, I can't imagine he's going to choose the gunshot....unless he liked a challenge.
A lot of cases it doesn’t even matter for the ER doc. If bad enough the disposition is the same, patient needs a trauma surgeon. Honestly hard to say which is worse because it’s so situation dependent. Obviously ballistics have the potential for greater damage.
Trauma is trauma. Tourniquet, chest tube, etc etc., treatment is often the same regardless of mechanism of injury. Knife wounds can be tricky however because often it’s harder to tell with knives exactly how much damage is done.
It’s location dependent as well. Someone getting shot through the calf may be less work for me than someone stabbed as the stabbing needs suture repair (GSW gets irrigation and a pressure dressing).

I have been shot in the shoulder with a 9mm round. This only happened a few years ago so I remember it well.
All the things you hear are pretty much true, you don't immediately feel pain but more like an intense heat focused on a small point. Its not until your brain starts working and you come out of adrenaline shock that you start feeling what most would describe as pain, but it's more of a generalized pain over the whole area.
I would much rather be shot again (non lethally) than break 2 ribs again, if that tells you anything.

This. Seen a ton of folks shot. The more minor the wound the more screaming.

I heard a guy at a range put a .22 through his calf in an accidental discharge, then saw the aftermath. He was a few stations down from me. Through and through. Just said that it was burning. Honestly thought there'd be 100x more blood. He just limped to the truck after wrapping it in a t-shirt and his buddy presumably brought him to the hospital.
Always thought he was a tough SOB. Wasn't freaking out at all.

Got shot in the eye with a pellet gun... lacerated cornea. By far the worst pain. Followed by...
Meningitis
Smashed big toe on a tree racing dirtbikes
Kidney Stones
Torn rotator cuff

This footage from Vietnam caught a fire-fight on tape and a guy gets shot. He's all amped up with adrenaline and talks about how it happened on camera. A few minutes later the pain sets in and you can see his demeanor change.
I cued the clip up to right when he was being pulled back to safety.

Got shot in my big toe by .22 when I was a kid. Cut a groove in the side of my toe. Burned like hell at first. Hurt worse for several days after. Remember my dad put some iodine on it, wrapped it and sent me on my way. I guess since he’s the one that accidentally shot me, he made it out like it wasn’t a big deal. Looking back probably not the way to handle that.

I was grazed by a bullet when I was a young kid riding my bike down the road. It left a huge strawberry on my shoulder.

And obviously you feel it before you hear the gunshot, right?
