She is not physically violent but threatens suicide and tries to make others lives miserable (especially my mother) when she doesn't get her way or she is in one of her rage cycles. She takes about a ton of prescription drugs to try to stabilize her and at least allows her to function enough to work. At some point you have to just accept that they will probably go through with killing themselves or frick their lives up beyond repair. I've decided I wont sacrifice my own mental health and put up with her problems once my mother dies.

mizzoukills this absolutely breaks my heart. I'm so sorry .. as the mother of 3 I can't imagine this from any angle, mine, the hurting child or the children that are watching.

And as a father I look at my children and hope and pray they don't eventually succumb to mental illness.
But instead of exposing my children at young ages to traumatic stuff, I'm going to shield them from it until they're at a mature age to discuss it.

Good grief Kills. What an awful thing for a family to go through. As a parent of a child, I can't imagine the emotional pain that causes on your parents daily.

which is why I'm trying my best to create a happy stress free household with occasional whimsy and magic (I do magic as a hobby and purchase very large canvas for my children to paint on). I even create custom frames for their paintings and hang them around the house.
Happiness is therapeutic. I try to take our happiness and make it even grander by injecting it with creativity and wonder. I do that because you never know what life will throw at you. You never know when shite will hit the fan.
Therefore, embrace as much as happiness as possible in the moment. Cherish it. Happiness, like life itself, is the most precious commodity and certainly has an expiration date.

I would not turn my back on him just yet. Sounds like he really needs the help right now. People act very different when they are depressed. Just brush if off, depending on how close of a friend you would consider him.

Dont involve the police. Get 3 people (family members are best) and have him taken to the ER and put under 72 hours watch. They will get him medicated and into a psychiatric facility.

That's not going to work. In Louisiana you have to contact the coroner's office if you believe someone might be suffering from a mental illness. They have to contact a coroner and ask for an "order of protective custody". That allows for police officers to go get that individual and bring them in for an evaluation, during which they can be held for up to 72 hours. When the OP got him sent to University all they were worrying about was the OD. They're not the best equipped place to go if someone needs mental health treatment. Judging by the threatening texts my guess is this guy won't just go willingly.

It does.. The worst part is there are times where she acts so normal and is helpful and loving to my children and she doesn't understand why my wife wants to shield them from her. Mental illness is terrible but like you said so well it is contagious in a way. Trying to understand and help a mentally ill person will often times make you mentally ill too. My sister has had several doctors turn their backs on her because they cant help her anymore. My mom is the only one left to put up with her shite.

I have a friend that I've been knowing for a few years here in Texas. He has all these odd stories that don't add up and it sounds like he's probably tried to kill himself on several occasions but we won't come out and actually admit it. I have no idea how to really approach it to get the guy help. But if he isn't being honest about it I don't know if it's really my place to try to get him help.
