We rarely eat out at restaurants anymore, really only when traveling. For 2 reasons, one, we don't want to pay for the overpriced coke/tea/drinks, and two, don't want to have to have tip more.

We usually only go out to eat on date night, special occasions or when traveling. We do get takeout about once or twice per week. That takes out the tipping, overpriced drinks and waiting out of the equation and we still don't have to cook.

I feel really sorry for your wife

My SO sometimes says let’s just drink a little before we order so we can enjoy each other’s company longer

I worked in restaurants in school and understand the annoyance of people dwelling too long at a table so that is part of it.

Plus I have children 9 and 7 with foodie in-laws who would have us in restaurants 5 nights a week if I didn’t object. Years of that has taken the joy out of going out to eat.

The price inflation at restaurants is also bothersome considering I know what things cost to make. Nothing like getting gouged for mediocre at best food and paying 500-1000% premiums on drink.

Love going to restaurants but this is 100% me! When I’m ready to go I’m ready.

If I am going to a restaurant by myself to eat, I will typically ask for the check when they bring the food.

So you're miserable and self centered.

I don't do facebook or twitter or some stupid self-promotional app. I don't need to impress you or anyone else. I know what I like and that's what makes me happy.

What in the actual frick does any of this have to do with sitting in a restaurant and enjoying a meal with friends and/or family?

By the way, what kind of restaurants do you usually go to?

It has to do with being pretentious, which a lot of "going out to eat" is all about. Sitting in a restaurant paying $200-$300 to eat some steaks and have some wine so you can "enjoy the atmosphere." No thanks.

it amazes me that as men age they develop a hatred for people.

While I don't share OP's disdain for restaurants, I have noticed myself becoming more and more particular about the company I keep. As my time on this earth grows shorter, I will not waste it on people whose company I don't enjoy. That said, the restaurant atmosphere plays a big part in how much time I spend there.
