They're asp. We have them over here in Houston. Haven't seen any this year yet but I stay far away when I do.

You found one of these things at LSU? During all my ‘pillar seasons on campus I only saw the common green, horned red, and spiny black.

That is funny how you say that. I remember seeing them everywhere in spring for a few years after Katrina in Midcity NOLA. I haven’t seen one in years now that I think about it. Do they spawn in cycles?

I think they must, because it seems like one year I’ll see a shitload of them and none the next year.

Arborist here. I’ve been stung numerous times by these assholes. There’s a steroid cream that really helps but it doesn’t last long and there is only 1 refill. I’ve had to take 2 guys to the ER for really bad reactions to stings, one guy quit because he was so afraid of being stung again.

A caterpillar of some variety stuck me through a leather gloves one year clearing around my magnolia tree.

It burned like fire. If I wouldn't have taken my glove of as far as I did it would have had to be cut off my finger.

That thing sweetie so fast and so much i couldn't been it by the time I got to my front door. Maybe 40 ft.

I never saw which one but y'all's recollection of this one reminds me of that.

My wife's reaction when she saw my finger was priceless. I thought it was going to split open it was so tight. I wanted to cut it open for relief with my damn pocket knife

I got stung by one at the same place. I had never heard of these before that happened.

Mosquito abatement control probably. You never see fireflies in area that are sprayed b/c it kills them.

I was going to post a saddleback. One got me when I was around 10 years old. I cried, and I’m proud to admit it. That fricker hurt like a mofo. 45 years later, I still remember exactly where I was when it happened. Coolest looking caterpillar though.

When I was younger. Both times I was mowing the yard and ducked under a tree branch, damn things fell on my shoulder/neck. I still think about it any time I am under a tree.

But seriously. It used to be an infestation. I haven’t seen one in many years.

I actually found a half eaten one in my yard, probably from my cats. But yea I know what you mean about not seeing them around. I remember as a little kid and my grandma having a ton of them on her tomato plants. Both my parents have grown some and I have too on occasion and we never had many on any of our plants. Personally I blame the white man and global warming.
