I'm seeking information about the 1st Battalion/ 3rd Marines Bravo Company. Specifically an incident that happened May 25th, 1969 during Operation Virginia Ridge.

I've found a good bit of info, but I would really like to track down and talk to somebody that may have been there or have first hand info. I'm not sure exactly how to go about doing that, so if anybody could point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

TIA

did you try looking around for a Vietnam Vets group on Facebook? I'm thinking that the youngest person you'll find still alive will be around 68 or 69 years old...

I grew up with Steve Lusk, he is president of the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Association in BR. if he can’t answer your questions, he can certainly point you in the right direction. Steve lost a leg by stepping on a booby trap during his time there. Good guy to talk with.
ETA: I kind of lost track of him over the years,. Wish I could give you more info.

The reason I'm looking is because my uncle died in what the government told the family was a mortar attack by the NVA.

I recently stumbled on a military message board post from 2011 by a man who claimed to be in my uncle's unit and there that day. He claimed that what really happened was a dumbass cooking his lunch set some empty boxes on fire which spread to their own mortars setting them off. Apparently the government has been covering it up.

Basically I'm just trying to find out the truth.

I thought this was about an animal health issue in an Vietnam. If this actually is about a veterinarian in Vietnam, I would suggest Pham Van Duc. Located in Ho Chi Minh. Very good with our pet rabbit.

I didn’t, but my Uncle Terry did. He fought in the 2nd Battalion/ 4th Marines Bravo Company. Now Uncle Terry was never a popular man, even by those he worked with. You've probably heard of a man abandoning his battalion, but I doubt you've heard of a battalion abandoning a man.

One morning Uncle Terry wakes up in the middle of Da Nang all alone. All his battalion left him were 3 bottles of Jack Daniels and some weaponry. Uncle Terry then chugs one of the bottles of Jack Daniels and throws it in the middle of the jungle. So Terry takes the remaining 2 bottles of Jack, an M16, 2 pistols, and a couple of hand grenades and walks off into the unknown.

Eventually Uncle Terry came upon a village, and from the village came people. Now were these people Charlie or the people Uncle Terry was sent to protect from Charlie? Uncle Terry didn't know. But he knew he had to act.

So Uncle Terry takes out the second bottle of Jack Daniels and takes a swig, and then he pulls out his M16 as a farmer would wield a scythe. The bullets came flying. And as hay would fall in front of a farmer, so the people fell in front of Uncle Terry. The men, the women, and by god even the children.

Finally Uncle Terry stood alone in the mud and the blood and the guts with no one else left standing. Uncle Terry then opened the third bottle of Jack and he took a long swig. Then Uncle Terry's hand brushed against his leg, and he felt wetness. And then he felt shame because he realized he had pissed himself in fear. But upon closer inspection, it was not urine; it was ejaculate. And his shame was then replaced by pride.

IF, and that's a big if, that happened, the military would say it's a result of enemy action in order to make your uncle's family feel better about his death. This happened occasionally. Most likely he was killed by a mortar. Just because some guy on the internet says it was an accident, doesn't make it true.

What do you expect to get out of this? Shut down the Marine Corps?

Either way, he's not coming back.

And what stopped you from serving your country honorably like your friend? Stubbed toe? A bad case of the sniffles?

He was. That part isn't in question.

There's also a book by a guy from the unit which seems to corrabate the basic version of events that the guy said, although some key differences. There's was some debate on the accuracy of the book though. That's why I would like to hear it from a direct source.

I just want my dad to be able to know the truth about what happened to his brother. You dont need to be a dick.

Maybe I have you confused with another poster. If so, I apologize for the comment about your uncle.
