Steve is a couple years older than I. He was drafted in the way the draft was held from the wars before VN. At the time that I was registering for the draft as was law back then within 10 days after your 18th birthday. the draft board instituted the draft lottery of which I was a part of in 1970. The draw of my birthdate was 83 I believe. I did take my physical, and was listed as 1-A. Also at that time I was a student at LSU, so I applied for and received a student deferment. By the time of my graduation 1974, the war was winding down, and the US was removing combat forces from Vietnam. I hope that answers your question.

I beleieve the student deferments were cancelled by then. Most US combat troops were out of S. Vietnam by 1971.

You are so wrong with this statement.
Another friend of mine was also in the draft lottery. His number was 23. He didn’t report to boot camp until 1971, and served in VN until 1972.
The draft lottery lasted only 2 years as best I can recall. 1970 and 1971.

You don’t owe that douchebag an explanation.

Yes, one of the most unfortunate parts of my uncle's death is that they were one of the very first units to he pulled out of Vietnam. He was literally just a couple months from being home. Had he lived he would have been in Camp Pendelton in California to celebrate his 21st birthday with his friends, and back home with his family by thanksgiving. Instead he died on a hill in Vietnam aged 20 and my grandparents received a bronze star instead of their son.

Sorry for the loss of your uncle.
Like the other poster said, this is more likely an effort to make a family feel better about a bad outcome than something nefarious.
You'd be shocked at the level of stupidity exhibited by folks in the military. Im not remotely surprised by the "cooking" version of the story.
More recently in the first gulf war they found a huge cache of chemical weapons. In the infinite wisdom of the military they decided to blow it up... Upwind of about 50,000 troops including my unit which was basically gassed by the army.
Stupid stuff happens all the time.

Thanks
Seems like the official reports I've seen just kind of skip over about the entire week surrounding May 25th. At least what's available publicly on the internet. Odd because I've been able to find basically step by step descriptions of most of the rest of the operation, but no official mentions around the time of an incident that left 13 KIA, 2 MIA, and 29 WIA... You'd think something like that would be mentioned.
Also find it odd that only lists 1 MIA from the entire operation, when I've seen 2 listed as MIA just from the day I'm talking about. I guess they could have found one of the missing later on, but Idk
What I've gathered so far it was much worse than 6 WIA. Between those killed, missing, and wounded badly enough to have to leave the unit lost over 40 marines that day.
Also it supposedly happened May 25th, and my uncle and others killed with him are all listed as "KIA by Hostile Action, killed by mortar or artillery fire." So I wouldn't expect an official report to admit to friendly fire.

yes, that's it. I actually haven't seen that report before, so thank you
Weird how nearly every account I find lists a different number of those KIA...

I didn't say no one was drafted and served in S. Vietnam in 1971. I said most combat troops were out of S. Vietnam by late 1971. Support troops were still in country in large numbers. Combat units were being pulled out in 1971 due to the Vietnamization program.
