Weird how nearly every account I find lists a different number of those KIA..
It's possible some folks died after being evac'd. They might not show up one report but would show up on another.
Here is where I found it. You can see what else your uncle was involved with.

Thank you, seriously. I really appreciate that. I know my dad will too

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the story you tell has some truth to it. Anytime a large operation is going on (i.e. construction site, etc.), there will invariably be accidental injuries and even occasional fatalities. Unfortunately, when you throw in the elements of war and the fact that most everyone in the military is only about 18 years old, that kind of accident has to be even more prevalent.
Hope you can find any info that will put your dad's mind at ease.

Not to hijack but where could I find the service records for a Marine in Vietnam searching by only first and last names?
Is there anything like that?

Depends on what you are looking for. If you are a relative you can request their records from the VA.
What exactly are you looking for? Maybe I can help.

My fathers discharge is in question.
There are two (family) conflicting reports-
1- He discharged a firearm on base in field (no injuries) and was discharged
2- He discharged a firearm in combat (causing civilian fatalities) and was discharged
I have no idea if he was discharged honorably or dishonorably, either.

Another derail: my grandfather was 82nd Airborne/Green Beret I think. My mom remembers him answering the phone and having to leave minutes after quite frequently growing up without him being able to say where he was going. And within days after him passing away a representative from the Army showed up and had her and her siblings sign off on a settlement (Agent orange and cancer).
My mom tried to get a copy of his service record and duplicate medals and according to the Army it was conveniently destroyed in a fire. Are we SOL on ever finding out what he actually did?

Y'all derail all y'all want. If somebody else besides me can find some answers about their own family through this thread then that would be awesome

You want to request a copy of his DD-214 from the VA. As his son you can access it. It will have all the info you are looking for. If you get it and need help decoding it, I can help.

There were a large portion of veterans records destroyed in a fire. I would make a new request just to make sure. If the VA settled, they should have a record.
You have a ballpark timeframe for his service?

was he out of the Army before 1972? if so, that's true about the fire...contact the VA and see if he has a file...and does anybody have a copy of the agreement they signed? that really smells fishy to me...and if you continue to have problems, go Congressional!!! every Representative and Senator has someone whose whole purpose in life is to work VA stuff...
