Like anything, it depends on what they are doing "on screen." 3 isn't too young for a tablet no more than 3 being too young for watching a TV show
Nailed it.

Not to mention the wealth of learning and developmental apps they have for kids at 2-3.

You know most parents are letting their kids play games or watch TV shows/movies for hours on end on it. The main reason these parents get their kids tablets or phones is to keep them quiet and occupied.

This kinda proves my point then that tablets aren't bad for 2-3 year olds, no more than a TV is, like Roger said.

Yet everyone railing against tablets has allowed their kids to watch some cartoons.

Disagree. It's a great learning tool and a lot of what a 3 year old does needs some adult cooperation. 3 year olds don't just cue up and start watching movies.

Yeah and too much TV isn't good either. You and some others may be responsible parents and restrict how much TV and tablet time they have but most parents don't. A 2-3 year old shouldn't have a tablet or at the very least their time on it should be limited and monitored. But of course many parents see it as a way to keep their kids from bugging them.

This is generally how it works. It's also a good tool to teach kids responsibility.

Purely anecdotal, but all the kids I see are watching Netflix or playing games on it. Unless I see some amazing statistics, I'm not going to assume most parents are using it for educational purposes under monitored situations.

That's up to the parents. These kids could easily watch Netflix on TV.

Games are a mixed bag. My youngest did play a lot of games but we always approved the download and they were very educational. I see it as a benefit, she's faaar ahead of the rest of her grade and is taking Extended Learning classes.

Tablets or computers can be an awesome learning tool. Even watching movies and playing games.

I got my daughter an ASUS ZenPad Z380M for her upcoming 6th birthday. I signed up for Google Family Link (invite only, but only took 2 days to get the invite), which allows you make a google account for your child and give you complete control over the tablet (including remotely setting time limits, locking the tablet, monitoring app usage, location, etc.). Once the child turns 13, you can choose to release their google account and make it theirs with no restrictions.

You can even go simpler than that for a younger child. The Zenpad has a "kids mode" that completely locks down the tablet except for the apps you select. It's slightly out of your price range but a much better experience than a low-end Fire tablet.

I highly doubt this. It may be true for you and other parents on here but there a number of parents that don't limit their kids very much if at all.

Well, for practical purposes we're talking about someone who is posting here.

A tablet is just a tool. It's like combining tv, games and reading material into one device. As with any other tool or toy, how it's used is important.

Even if it's for entertainment, how is it any different than kids toys and games?

my kids' school requires one for homework. They have an app that they use to complete math assignments. You can do it on a laptop but the app is much easier to use and a tablet is "strongly suggested"

do you also think they shouldn't ever watch TV?

It's no different.

It's called a book. Get your child to start reading at a young age. You'll thank Scruffy later.

Scruffy has apparently never heard of e books. They're cheaper than the real ones in most cases.

So the issue isn't the tablets, it's the parents.

That's the point. Tablets can be great for 2-3 year olds.

I love books on my Kindle. Find something that I want to read and I'm starting it in a few minutes all from my couch.

bullshite! Bought my 3 year old an iPad mini when they came out. Put it in a pink otterbox and she uses it a lot.
Fortunately, she likes playing outside more.

But it's a good item to teach them responsibility.

My youngest benefitted greatly from games and such that helped her read and learn math. She's waay ahead of her classmates.

Like any tool or toy, parental involvement is the key for it being productive or entertainment, not that there's really anything wrong with either.
