doesn't matter which state. Just trying to get a feel for the environment. Will you be able to work remotely moving forward?

ETA

Should clarify which field. Engineering

Does prisoner count? Technically a state employee. I'm doing 5-10 for not wearing a mask.

I'm sure the environment would depend on which state.

Thanks. Wouldnt mind getting on with Baldwin County, but I am loving the mobile work environment.

Technically, I work for county, Dallas County. I am in Facilities for Hospital. We are on remote until notice, at least until after labor day. Talked to a colleague who works at UT in Austin. They are on remote until January. He works for Facilities also.

I worked for the state. Couldn't get out fast enough.

When I first started I was gung ho and introducing a few new processes to improve efficiency. The reaction was more negative than positive.

There was also a TON of free time in my department. Sounds great in theory but it was incredibly depressing. It felt like I was wasting my life away.

Layers of management limits productivity and progress.

Excelling at the job wasn't rewarded. Raises weren't merit based. The guy who just fills a chair everyday can be making more than the top guy in the office, just because he has been employed longer.

It may not be like that everywhere but it took me from disliking the government to despising it.

eta: The people I know who work for the state are now back at work.

As did I. I didn’t believe the stories of how lazy state workers were.

Most of my office mates were cool, but Its an entire different mindset. I was climbing the walls bored. Left after 6 months.

Kinda depends on what you do in engineering on how much you could do remotely. I work in construction admin, so good amount of tine at job sites. We didn't lose much productivity if any during the stay at home orders, but we had to get back to the office quicker than most because our admin believes in the "butts in seats" theory. I have a buddy at the USACE that I believe still isn't back at his office yet.

I'd wager about 75% of us here are state employees. That's why we post so much during the day.

State employees have been doing a combination of both
It really depends on your job duties
Some can work remotely
Others can't
Some can do both depending on their schedule

Have been doing so since March, been able to do about 95% of my job at home (the remaining 5% I have the ability to go to my office).

Unbelievably, they are still giving out pensions to state employees.
