Is there a reason you can't make the short drive to Houston for your child's brain?
This right here. I would not limit recommendations to Louisiana. Maybe Boston.

Yes, Boston, Cleveland...really any major city will likely have superior pediatric care than any where in Louisiana. I mentioned Houston Bc it's world class and nearby. If OP is in BR or Nola, Houston is no further than say Shreveport. Maybe there's some insurance reason or something? there are some people who have this strange insistence on staying in Louisiana no matter what, and there are others who simply don't think to look elsewhere.

Frederick Boop at St. Judes removed my son's brain tumor and saved his life.
Best pediatric neuro surgeon in my humble opinion.

There is a very solid neuro in Baton Rouge named Dr. Waguespack. Not sure if he operates on children.

We found a doc in Monroe...Dr. Aristoteles Pena-Miches and were very happy with how he treated her. JMO
That's who I was talking about when I said Pena. He's always packed out, tons of patients.

I have known dr Pena for years. I work in a medical field and worked with him and his patients for years. Then my son had seizures when he was about 15 months old. Seen dr Pena for that.

Another vote for Dr. Tilton in nola- if you need neurology and not neurosurgery...Have personally worked with her and she is fantastic.

She's still on medication to this day and will be for the rest of her life.
My sister was on heavy, heavy medication for epilepsy from age 12 through her early twenties. They decided to try weaning her off of them and it worked. Not everyone outgrows epilepsy, but some do. She hasn't had to take anything in years.

He's operated on two family members, and examined another who he told didn't need surgery after another doctor said she did. One of the best in the world, but you will wait a couple of months for an appointment (barring emergencies) and you will sit in his waiting room for a couple of hours with the other 60 people waiting to see him. He's also gone a lot speaking at conferences and whatnot.
Dude is also one of the sharpest dressers I've ever seen.

Didn't meet Dr. Conravey, but we used Dr. Lori Mcbride.
Dr Conravey is a pediatric neurologist, and I am 99% certain she is no longer at Children's but has moved to Ochsner.
Dr McBride is a pediatric neurosurgeon. remembering what I do about your little one, you wouldn't have crossed paths with the former.

I've worked with most of the CHNOLA staff, and I don't think any of them relate to patients better than Dr Tilton.
The rest of the staff are very good at their jobs, too. And if your personalities mesh, any one of them could be your favorite. But I can't see anyone disliking Dr Tilton.
But if she's not available, Doctors Deputy, McGuire, Weimer, Wong, and Gautreaux are all fantastic physicians. There's nothing wrong with the idea of leaving the state as mentioned before, but just realize the vast majority of the rankings referred to deal with things that aren't necessarily related to patient care. The number of papers the physicians at one center publish doesn't mean anything to the parents of a child with a disease, basically any tertiary center is fine. They'll know what they're not comfortable treating and send you somewhere more specialized if you need, but that's unlikely to be the case in my experience.

What makes you think Houston has more "world class" and "superior" health care to Louisiana? I'd be willing to bet you know nothing more than have heard about MD Anderson. There are many good doctors in this state and while others might be better in certain disciplines worth traveling for that is not always the case.
To the OP do your research and due diligence and what is best for your child. You did not mention the diagnosis so the board can only speculate on who would be best and many good suggestions have been made however, it could be that none are appropriate for your child. Good luck.

It's the Law of Bigger Cities. When the doctors in Crowley aren't smart enough, the ones in Lafayette come next. Then, you can get sent on up to Baton Rouge where they're even smarter. When you can't get treatment in Baton Rouge because they're not smart enough, you can skip New Orleans and go straight to Houston because at that point, you need a big city Doctor. They're just smarter there. I mean...they live in a bigger city.

My daughter has been on Lamictal XR for 8-9 years and seems to control her seizures very well. She's probably only had about 4 seizures in the last 7 years or so. As a college student they tended to happen when more of her triggers were present(severe lack of sleep, forgetting to take medication, etc). She sees a neurologist in Dallas about once/year now for check ups and to check her lamictal levels.
She had one in BR about three years ago while she was driving and had a couple friends in the car. The passenger had to take the wheel and put her car into a ditch. Lucky as hell someone else was in the car with her and thankfully no one was injured. Her doc doesn't believe she'll outgrow it.

John Flatt
My oldest son had a form of childhood epilepsy that started out of the blue one night when he was in 1st grade with a gran mal seizure. Thankfully it was the only one he ever had and the condition passed as he approached puberty, but during that time we saw Dr. Flatt first in Lafayette than in Covington when he moved his practice. He also treated him for a tick condition which also passed at around the same time. We really liked him.

H2o, I'm a doc now and went to med school in NOLA. I rotated at Children's Hospital with Drs. Tilton and Deputy. They are both incredible. If you want doctors who are experts in their field, actually teach the material, and are heavily involved in academic medicine (meaning they see EVERYTHING, from the mundane to the super rare)., I think this would be a good route to go. Dr. Wong was also great to work with, but he doesn't have the reputation of Deputy and Tilton. Just my 2 cents. Hope y'all find the care your little one needs

I would say it depends on what is being treated. I needed one and a pediatric neurosurgeon and I chose to go to New York Long Island Medical Center to see a Dr Bolognesse after seeing a horrible neurosurgeon in BR
