gas.

Unless you are confident enough and have the right tools/materials, install the gas fittings, and check for leaks, I would advise getting a plumber to hook up the gas line. It can very dangerous to frick it up. It’s not like plugging in a cord for an electric.

So buy one and haul it up there, unbox, and station it for hookup. Then just ask for a hookup fee.

It's honestly a contender for easiest change-out jobs there is when it comes to household "major" repair.

The problem is emptying/getting the old one out and moving the new one in

Actual installation is easy

Are you a female? Is your husband away? It doesn't get much easier to DIY, unless you're changing to tankless and didn't state it in the OP.

What are you easy DIY guys doing for the copper tubing? Are you sweating it or doing those new little compression fittings that need a special tool? What’s the best?

I prefer to sit at my desk and post on TD, preferably with a beer or glass of wine while that work is being performed, and hope they are quiet about it

If its in the attic, yes

When i built my house I specifically told them to have it in garage for easy replacement

Also wont flood my house when it inevitably fails

I’m not sure why they do that over here, space saving I guess, you do pay a replacement upcharge for that though, and it’s a pretty good bump

Easier for plumber to do everything in attic

Sucks for homeowner when the tank fails and pipes freeze

Gas or electric? Attic or closet?

Just do it your self but get someone the help physically move one out and put the other one in its place.

I’ve had a Rheem tankless for 13 years without a single issue. I do flush it every couple years though. Easy task.

I'm a licensed plumber OP. However, if my username wasn't a dead giveaway, I'm in Kentucky. I'm happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you might have.

Absolute trash. There's a reason why we cut these crap fittings out when we repair/replace lines. It's not a matter of IF they will fail, but WHEN.
