if I was your flight instructor and you had that big of a gap I'd probably start you out from scratch and have you review what you've already completed.

Definitely would start from scratch again!

Yep. It’s expensive and worth it. I’m about $40k into it with ppl and ifr ticket. Only need a few hours for commercial.

PPL/ASEL here. Flew with GGA out of KNEW. Wanted to go to Riddle, opted to not take on the debt.

The corporate side of Aviation is booming right now and I’ve been able to rise rather quickly whereas at the airlines I would’ve been a slave to seniority hoping a major would pick me up.

How would you compare your scheduling and benefits?

ExpressJet

Wasn't ExpressJet the golden child of regionals when it was part of CO?

Did UA screw it that bad?

Anyway, flying self-loading freight sucks

Fly to Grass Strip Field at Gaston's resort on the White River in Bull Shoals, Arkansas.

Here is how to do it VFR

Beautiful flight. Good Salad Bar and burger. Nice restaurant on (overlooking) White River.

Maybe a better post

Here is the resort Airfield page

there are/were several pilots in my family

-my dad's older brother
-my dad's younger brother
-my older cousin
-my younger cousin
-my brother

both cousins died in plane crashes. it is a dangerous hobby no matter who many hours you have.

Anyone here just have the recreational license? Its half the cost and you don't need a medical certificate.
You can only fly a two seater, can't fly cross country or at night and other restrictions but seems like a good deal for someone who just wants to fly a couple hours on a weekend.
I've always wanted to look into this.

I used to fly there every spring/summer with my college roommate. Definitely worth the trip!

Try an orientation flight. If you don't feel comfortable with it you'll know pretty quick if you want to continue.

I flew one at Lakefront. LOVED it. Currently saving the scratch to go get my license.

Not worth the cost, IMO. Can’t fly further than 50nm from your home airport and can only fly in Class G and E airspace, which essentially eliminates flying around any decent location. Doing a loop over the same small strip of terrain every time you fly seems like it’d get awfully boring.

ETA: Also not quite as cheap as it sounds. Requires a minimum of 30 hours, which on average will cost over $4K. I finished my PPL in 45 hours and had none of those silly restrictions. Go ahead and do the whole thing if you’re going to do it, IMO.

There are a couple companies that will finance the cost, if you’re interested.

I have a V tailed Bonanza (ironic right).

Do you like it? Heard upkeep is expensive on those Bonanza's, but I guess any complex will be more expensive. Ive been seriously looking into the Long EZ style planes. Cheap to purchase, cheap to fly, and fast, which I realize is a bad combination.

When you put it that way it seems silly to just get the recreational license.

Im on the road about 150 days a year and I’m scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance so I work way less then I did at the airlines for much better money. Benefits are about equal with better retirement then the regionals. None of this compares to the major airlines obviously, the pay and benefits aren’t even close.

Gave up on paying for flight training in college. Managed to get Uncle Sam to pay for my ratings after graduation. Its a good deal, in the Reserves at least. I wouldn't touch active duty.

Patrick Lynn LeBlanc, Sr. (March 21, 1954 – March 10, 2008), usually known as Pat LeBlanc, was a prominent Lafayette, Louisiana, architect and businessman who was also active in Republican politics. LeBlanc and his pilot perished when their single-engine airplane crashed over northern Vermilion Parish. His death came eleven days before his 54th birthday and only four months after having been defeated in a high-profile race for the Louisiana House of Representatives. His pilot was R. Solomon Reed, Jr. (born May 4, 1947), of Opelousas, the seat of St. Landry Parish in south Louisiana.[1]

I keep reading about how we will have a pilot shortage. Out of curiosity, how much does it cost for one to become a commercial pilot now (ballpark figure)? And how long would it take?

The pilot shortage is real and it’s a very good time to enter the industry. There are accelerated courses that advertise 90 days for completion but I think it’s more reasonable to expect 4-5 months even in their program. There are always delays during your training you can’t account for, mainly weather. Lookup ATP flight training if you’re interested in the accelerated program, they also have financing available to help out. Cost are around 60k now I think for the full program.

Xjet used to be the best regional by far but they were seperated and spun off from continental then purchased by another regional for the purpose of eliminating competition. Since then they’ve been dying a slow and painful death.

I flew air med briefly so I worked freight like schedules during the night-shift and was constantly loading stretchers/isolets. By far the worst job I ever had.
