I hate when shift work people say they work half the year. While technically correct, you must sleep late on many of your days off because you get off of nights. That's also saying you don't work ot which is not common in plant work. Not all.shite work falls into this but the majority does.

These are my experiences for what it's worth. I've never worked shift work, but here's what I have done and my 2 cents.

9 to 5 (actually 8:30 to 5:00 or later) working for myself, weekends off and vacation whenever I wanted to or could afford it. Pretty nice, but stressful work and I've actually made more money at my last 3 jobs.

24 hr. call. Absolutely sucked, although I made the most money. Spent about half the year away from home on deepwater rigs, but made good money. When I was home, never knew when I was going to work or how long I'd be gone. Could be 3 days, could be 3 weeks. I'd rather be broke.

7&7 and 14&14. 14 days is too long to be gone from home for me, even though I don't have kids. 7&7 seems perfect. The week at work away from home can drag on, and the week at home flies by, but I think it's the best balance. I work half the year and make more than many people who work all year with 2 weeks vacation.

Hmmmmmm...you wouldn't happen to work with a guy who's nickname is a color, do you?

ETA: Nm, I just saw the Chems you work with.

The worst. I took a roughly 40 percent pay cut after quitting 24/7 work and moving into an office. It was worth it.

View your salary in terms of compensation for what you are unable to do because of your work. For you, that's likely something along the lines of a consistent social life and adequate sleep. If you have a family, you have more issues more than likely.

Determine how much compensation is worth what you're giving up. If it's not worth the %increase in pay then look around. If it's worth it, stay.

My dad did shiftwork for several years while I was growing up. He hated it and it was tough at times, but he worked through it and is now a higher-up with a company in California. It seems like he never works these days; he's always sending me pictures of him and my mom at some random place in the Pacific Northwest he certainly earned it though

I used to be a Realtor. I got tired of working all my weekends in one of the sleaziest, most disrespected professions........so I gave up making a good bit of money one day and became an architectural photographer. Went through a lot of struggles and it took me 3 years to get back to the income level I left behind........but it was so fricking worth it.

I started out as a dock operator too with SGS. Did that for about three years and got hired on as an operator in a plant. The money as an actual plant operator is very good now that I've topped out and don't really rely on OT.

You couldn't pay me enough to do shift work. I've had plenty of chances to go into a plant or railroad and make atleast double what I make now (which isn't much, but still good money) and never thought twice about it.

I love working nights as a nurse. But I work straight nights....no rotating between days and nights. 3 12s a week is an awesome schedule.

Friend of mine is a nurse at the lake and he's always off doing some cool shite on his off days. Just takes like random trips to San Fran and shite because not married with no kids and that schedule just lets him blow money doing shite he wants, a little jealous.

My father was an operator and on side did appliance repair work. After 20 yrs he went into working as a repairman making more money for himself doing extended service work until he retired.

I worked for a refinery in California and gave it up while in college to work for large law enforcement agency. Worked evening shift most my career and a lot happier. While doing that I worked with a few people to start a nursery/ lawnmower repair/ lumberyard / small hardware store on the side.
We also built homes and my last 10yrs I didn't work a lot of OT due to made more with business. When I was eligible for retirement I left to focus on opening a few more stores.

Never looked back but got my retirement after 20 yrs.

Some people like it but i couldn't do it. A couple days off during the week sounds good until you realize all your friends are working.

Correct and most office jobs can claim almost the same thing once you factor in weekends off, vacation, sick leave and holidays.

I've been a paramedic for 18 years. I consider it the single worst decision I've ever made. If I could go back in time, the very first thing I would do is go back to my high school reunion and kick my own arse for even considering it.

Next month I'm returning to school as an electrical engineering major.
