As I sit here playing on my phone on this night shift I think maybe I should just go back to doing what I did before. But then I remember I made 20k less doing what I did before I worked in a plant.

Anyone here gave up because of the working hours?

I work 12 hour fast rotating shifts. So I change between nights and days each time I come to work. 36 hours one week and 48 the next. Every other weekend off. Basically I work half of the year

'06 Sierra. I'm not an operator.. though that's the course I'm on. I'm a dock operator. Just work with barge and ship transfers

Shift work is definitely not for everyone. Know many people that moved from shift to days, and only a handful have switched back.

Trust me, if I had the option to work straight days I would. A job working 4 10's would be ideal

I went from pipeline to steel foundry and now I'm in education/counseling. I much prefer the shift work man. Office life is boring as shite. I miss getting my hands dirty and actually leaving work exhausted. But I also spend most of my day now watching Hulu and Netflix, so there's a trade off with everything

Here's to finding what's best for you man

Here here. 7 12s was killing me. I'm much happier now, but my bank account sure isn't.

Shift work isn't for everyone. I'm not hating on your profession, operators or even ER/ICU nurses, 3 to 4 rotating 12's sounds miserable. Especially if you work the night shift. If I was at a job making $70 k a year 4 10's weekdays I would take that over making $90k overnight shift work.

Like you I have done both.

Grass is greener type situation. I'm back to 12's.

4 days off per week or 2 days off? If you are younger and single though that weekend on is a BITCH. All the best plans are made on your work weekend.

I always say, if work didn't suck, they wouldn't pay you to do it...just a matter of how much suck you can stand.

Basically my whole adult life was shift work until I took a "promotion" that had me working 5 10's in a miserable position with the weight of the world on my shoulders. The only bright spot was I absolutely loved the people that worked for me. 2 years was all I could handle and I made a career change to get back on shift work. I don't see myself ever going m-f again. Money is better and having half the year off is great too.

It cost me my marriage. Jody is a motherfricker.

Money was great but I am so much happier doing what I do now. More time with my kids, more time to enjoy life.

I wouldn't go back.
