My son is just starting his junior year in high school and he wants to be a pilot. We are looking at La Tech and their aviation program. I've heard it's on par with Embry Riddle. Anyone recommendations?? Worth it or go private?
TIA

I have talked to him about the Air Force because you can't beat free.....and I served myself in the early 90s, it's definitely an option.

I didn't do the school route. I got my private during/after college thru a flying club. After college, I found an Air Force Reserve unit that sent me to pilot training.

There are many different ways to the cockpit. Some cost serious $ and some they pay you. Good luck to him.

Don't get an aviation degree. It's useless. Get a real degree and get private instruction or join the military after college. However, new FAA regulations require an Airline Transport Liscence to fly for an airline which requires 1500 hundred hours. Obviously its really expensive to get that many hours or would require years of working as a flight instructor which pays peanuts. An aviation degree from a school like Tech or Embry Riddle will allow you to work for the airlines with fewer hours. 750 I think.

for commercial pilots they are at the top of the payscale.

Oil Company vs. Average Pay The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't provide specific wage data on helicopter pilots. Instead, it puts helicopter pilots in its "commercial pilots" job category, which also includes pilots of fixed wing aircraft. The average salary for commercial pilots in all industries was $80,140 per year as of May 2012. Half earned between $53,050 and $96,810 per year. Pay for commercial pilots employed by oil and gas extraction companies compare favorably: As of 2012, oil and gas commercial pilots reported average annual pay of $95,920 a year.

My cousin did it. Got out and flew for American Eagle and he now flies for the MGM Grand

He should get his private training under his belt before going though
