Maybe the result of inbreeding.

Can I forward your post to my wife?

She’s convinced our 4 year old daughter has some kind of immunodeficiency because she keeps getting sick. Started getting sick at the end of August and has been sick pretty much since. I’m like, “Didn’t preschool start at the end of August?”

It is frustrating taking so many days off of work though. I empathize, OP. Truly.

5 - just start kgarten? They get everything there. Immune system starts to build up. Ours were little Typhoid Marys for k-1st grade.

lol, yeah I hear that. And the whole lockdown during what would have been a lot of exposure to other kids at daycare, etc likely stifled a good bit of the natural immunities he'd have built up.

we finally brought him to an allergist to see if it's seasonal allergies or perhaps something worse.

It's not uncommon for kids to get sick frequently, but you should have done this (allergist) the minute you started wondering because they can rule out a whole lot of shite.

my youngest son has horrible eczema. Turns out he is allergic to wife's dog. she is STILL in total denial.

lol missed this gem. it most assuredly is not bunk science.

Ah. Well he did just get the flu but that was about 2 weeks ago. It's just frustrating that after a round of antibiotics and a week finally being fever-free, it's back to the doctor again.
I will be honest with you, the vast majority of the time, antibiotics aren’t needed. They probably had zero to do with your kid improving.

Congestion (of any color), fever, cough, etc., is almost always viral in kids.

People throw antibiotics around like candy.

Neutropenia is merely low neutrophil counts.

You kid has neutrophils, based on what you posted.

Viruses cause people to have low white cell counts.

In a vacuum, these concepts don’t mean much on their own.

I have 2 older boys who also got sick a lot during these days, but admittingly it's been a little while since so my memories of them being sick tends to be a little hazy. Still, I don't think it was this much.

It leaves you with just kind of a weird feeling. I'm wondering if maybe my pediatrician just doesn't know what they're doing.

Look, I’m speaking from a general sense here.

I know nothing about your kids’ individual cases.

Go to ENT and have then look at tonsils.

Sounds like chronically infected tonsils.

It doesn’t mean a whole lot. Like the other health care provider said in this thread, those are different cells that fight infection.

During infections those numbers typically elevate. One of the main things we track during infections are the White Blood cell count (both of the cells you mentioned are included in that number). If the WBC count is going up the infection is usually worsening. If it’s going down the infection is typically getting better.

Mine is 7 now but was in daycare most of his life up until covid shut everything down. I can tell you he was constantly "sick" with something or another until about age 4. The daycares are petri dishes. If your kid hasn't spent much time in daycare and then starts school, they are going to go through all that same shite because they hadn't been exposed to it before.

Not a doctor, but I’ve got a lot of coworkers and friends with kids in the 5 yo age group and they get sick…a lot. Stomach crud, ear crud, general crud.

I’d wait for your Dr obviously, but I wouldn’t be super alarmed about it.

Did you son spend a lot of his earlier years in daycare? Or did he stay home with mom?

He was in mother's day out from about 2-3yo before everything shut down.

Go see an ENT. My 3 and 5 year old boys are constantly sick with what seems like it could be cold or allergy stuff but always ends up being an ear infection. They were both scheduled to get their second set of tubes in their ears and have their adenoids removed this past Monday...they both ended up puking all night Sunday from 1 am to 6 am. Procedures moved to November when even Monday wasn't soon enough
