Bought a guitar at 47. Took online lessons for a couple of years and started to get modestly proficient. Then I tore a ligament in the middle finger of my left hand and couldn’t make it land where I wanted, so I quit. Picked it back up last week, restrung it, and am trying to retrain my fingers. Btw, I’m 54.

Playing guitar is a good “old man hobby.” Doesn’t involve anything that could pull a hammy or inspire people to make fun of you (like gardening). Although I do like gardening.

My buddy's dad took up bass guitar in his 50's. About a year later he was in a cover band that was doing little gigs around town.

I played as a kid. My Dr told me to think about starting again to help with arthritis.

FTR: Owl’s version of an “old man hobby” is pretty disgusting.

Let’s just say more than hammys get pulled.

Farming is for real men, put that guitar down and get back in the kitchen.

Started playing at 33. I guess that's considered later on life. I love it, but I'll admit I need to practice more.

Interesting. I'm in an 18 wheeler for months at a time and am bored as shite most evenings. Seems like I may have found something here...

Didn’t take it up until I was 17. Wish I’d done it much sooner.

I'm old. 55. Took up bass guitar about a year ago so I could make some noise with my 14-yr-old daughter who is getting to be a pretty fair drummer. We are practicing with her drum instructor, he puts together a student rock band for a rock concert recital each May, I am going to be the bassist on at least a couple of songs.

Go for it man, you are getting older whether you play or not! My secret fantasy is to maybe be a part of a local band, but that wouldn't be until after my girls are out of school. I wish I had started as a teenager.

It's a lot of fun. I'm no Carol Kaye but I'm getting to where I can hold down the I-IV-V.

Good, wholesome thread.

bullshite. People used to make fun of me all the time.

Turns out I'm a shite guitarist. Some of us play because it makes others happy. Then there are those of us who are best left to playing electric through headphones.

I still enjoy it, though. frick the haters.

I've always pondered the idea but it seems I still can't get motivated to do so. I have a feeling not learning to play the guitar or piano will be one of my regrets later in life.

Parlor guitar.

Don't spend much. Humidity and temp changes a trucker would drive through may jack up a guitar. Thats something to worry about down the road.
