Yeah a couple, worst part was not seeing who was shooting so I didn’t return fire

As most have already said, the majority of folks that have actually been in combat rarely survive it and the ones that do rarely think it is heroic and are just happy to be alive, let alone want to talk about it over a message board.
I guess there are some out there that don’t give a shite but I’m willing to bet it’s not many.

im asking because i truely do not know. Are their snipers typically not very good? I always assumed if a sniper saw you and fired, you were dead.

That’s why I was sure to say most and not all. Some are just wired different and It doesn’t bother them as much. Some come home and won’t speak a word about the things they have done and seen.

When I was over there we got pinned down by heavy fire one day and my best friend got hit so I dragged him back towards the chopper then I ran back and my lieutenant had gotten hit too so I carried him back and in the meantime something reached up and bit me in the buttocks

Unlike Hillary, my answer is no. My dad, however, did FIVE TOURS in Vietnam as a door gunner. He has never mentioned one word to me about those times but I can only imagine it was some really bad shite. FWIW, he was mindfricked to the extreme. Happy Father's day, his and others personal sacrifice will allow me to enjoy today.

Some of history's greatest writers struggle to relate war experiences. Can't expect the average person to be able to either relate, nor a listener to understand, what war is like.

It depends who you define as “their”. All of my experiences have been in Afghanistan and most of their fighters aren’t very good at all because they are piece milled together or flavor of the day. Every now and then we ran into a more organized/intelligent enemy, those were bad days for us. It was very easy to differentiate between the dudes who were just pissed we were in their village compared to the actual taliban

You’re right. I’m the same way. If asked I’ll talk about it but I don’t just go around bragging about it. I fought in the First Gulf war as a gunner on an Abrams. I didn’t do anything special other than knock out some tanks, apc’s, andcsome trucks. I’m sure I killed whoever was in those vehicles but I never even saw them. And yeah they fired back and our tank even took some hits. But they did nothing other then put some dents in the front of the turret.

It’s amazing this board sees veterans as humble, and if they aren’t humble they are lying. They should take a visit to their local vfw. Sheesh, the Army came up with badges for Soldiers to wear on their duty uniform for proof they came under enemy fire (CIB/CAB), talk about humble.
People handle “dramatic” events different no matter what the profession. Being humble or not doesn’t define whether someone is lying.

You’re right. Some of the misconceptions civilians have about the military are hilarious. Just in this thread some guy said something about the majority of soldiers who see combat don’t survive. Where do they come up with this shite?

I was friends with a lot of the Seabees that were in Public Works where I was stationed. A couple of guys were open about what they experienced during their deployments in Afghanistan and some only talked about it when they were really drunk. They experienced things such being fired at while on construction sites, convoys being attacked, seeing vehicles blown up by IEDs.
My best friend out of the group was bothered most by seeing dead kids, either blown up or shot up. He only opened up to me about that once when we were drinking together at his house. From what his wife said he did have issues from his experiences. A lot of nights she would stay up awake with him because he was having terrible nightmares.

None of my friends talked about it even if prodded a bit. But, one associate at work on a business trip told me about a time in Vietnam Nam when he was on recon and had to kill. He relayed the scenario, told me what he thought after the smoke cleared and never mentioned any of that again when we saw each other.

Thinking of my dad today. Lost him about 10 years ago. He served in the Korean War. The only thing he would ever say about his experience there was it was the coldest fricking place he had ever been. I think he meant more than just the temp, but he did not want to talk about it.
As others have said, most combat vets don’t like to talk about it. Recently lost a neighbor that was a WWII vet who fought through the island hopping in the Pacific. Would occasionally stop by after my morning walk and have some coffee. He could tell some incredible stories about his life and travels, but would not discuss his war experiences.
