Any of you guys/gals in Toastmasters?

Our company has a “club” and is asking for applications. Seems like it could be helpful in a lot of ways. Or it could be a cult. I have no knowledge of anything about it save their website. You?

To me it was fricking retarded but I get a rush from public speaking and love it. And I have a shite-ton of friends aka excuses to get out and drink.

I wish I had done it years ago. If you have to talk to groups of people in business, it’s well worth the time.

How would you rate your public speaking skills? Do you enjoy speaking in front of large groups?
I'm sure you have noticed in the business world, most of the C level type executives are great at public speaking.
If you need practice toastmasters is a good way to network and get that practice.
I did it as a young post college grad who didnt get many chances to present to large groups. Now my job mainly consists of presenting to groups so Toastmasters was a benefit to me.

Depending on the area, it can certainly be a useful tool to network.
We had a Toastmasters member speak at a Rotary luncheon a few years ago. He was probably the worst speaker we've ever had, I kid you not, so I can't really speak on how well it helps your public speaking abilities.

CSB. I'm an IT dork. Right out of college in 1999 I worked in Tax an Appraisal Software in Dallas. We were all IT dorks and one HR gal in this small company. When we had new clients the owner would go out and train them on how to do some things and hold small classes for tips/tricks/etc.
Besides the owner, the 15 others in the company dreaded teaching these classes or didn't know enough to teach.
When I got up to speed, I volunteered for every single one of these. Was a win-win as it made all my co-workers happy and I got free trips and meals in all parts of Texas(and some side trips over to Mexico) when I was 23 and single. From Del Rio/Acuna to Palo Duro Canyon and Austin/Waco to El Paso on the company dime.
TLDR I like public speaking/training/teaching and that's a major competitive advantage as a candidate in the IT field.

My company has a group. Since its a work activity, the members treat speech work and attendance as part of their job duties. They like to display their awards and achievement plaques. One of the best members didn’t make it through a staffing realignment for what it’s worth.

I had to join toastmasters for our company leadership program. It’s not too bad and helps build your network. Looks great on a resume too
