They call it overlanding, and you can’t do it properly without spending $20k on fancy roof racks, cantilevered tent platforms, LED lights and a winch.

It’s “wench”, baw!

I used to always sleep in my SUV growing up. I had a Durango and would lay all the seats down, put a foam mattress and a bunch of blankets. Roll the windows down. Was actually really comfy and I didn't need to set up a tent.

I would have been easier for you to just google "blm land" and you wouldn't look so much like a jackass

Years ago I had a Ford Explorer Sport that I’d use during deer season. I could lay down the back seats and roll out my bed roll.

I camped in my vehicle after the first night in a tent elk hunting in Montana. 5° with 20mph winds.

Plenty of time. Especially during covid. My Tacoma has a camper shell. I bought one of those suv tents so I can unload the gear into tent area and then blow up mattress in bed of truck.

Can setup or breakdown everything in about 20 mins

I go hiking in CO every year and on the front end and or back end we sleep in my explorer. A couple of times we needed to get on the trail before sun up so we drop to the trail head, packed for the hike, slept in our clothes, so we can jump up and go. Fold the seats down and deploy camping pad lol

ETA. It’s a lot safer out west as people aren’t willing to go to remote spots to carjack you

I always felt safer in the forest in the camper shell than my hammock tent. Falling branches can mess up a good night sleep

I am going to go ahead and assume this was not in BR or Houston

The only time we have slept in the car was when the power went out at the camp and we slept in the car with the a/c on.

Yes often, I have a campershell with a simple bed setup and storage below. It is robust for bad weather, truck has 110V, and packing up to leave is simply jumping in the driver seat.

I'll stick with my tent on the ground unless its camper van or something. I don't want to take down my car tent to use the car for the day.

This. Plus tents these days are pretty insane. Multi room, easy quick setup, and crazy accessories.

I know what BLM is. It was a smartass smh comment. The Bureau has been around and has had that acronym a whole hell of a lot longer than the Black Lives Matter bs. It just went over a lot of your heads. Understandably so, it was vague & you didn’t know what I meant. Use to be General Land after the war of 1812 & in the 40s, I think, became BLM.

A sleeping bag fits just fine in the back of an Audi A7, with the 2nd row seats folded down, if you’re 5’6”.

I had a few good nights under the stars out west.
