Not really a “breakdown” but two stories, same Honda minivan.
Once when returning home to DFW from BR, the AC died near Shreveport. Found a dealer open and they worked on it while we ate at the Mexican restaurant next door.
Other time was returning home to BR from Destin (several years and tens of thousands of miles later) and the alternator died somewhere near Gulfport, on Memorial Day.
So we find a dealer in Slidell that’s open and they are able to replace it while we waited.
So all I’ve learned is that my Honda is pretty reliable and when something goes wrong it’s easy to find a place to fix it.

Not exactly a breakdown, but one thrilling ride to the shop ! I’m driving a 1970 Porsche 911T in the CO mountains in the late 70’s. The throttle locked wide open. Almost a hundred mile to a Porsche mechanic on winding roads; key on, key off. Max acceleration to coast & brake.
Turned out to be a very minor carburetor issue. The mechanic could not believe I came down that road. For the youngsters, google carburetor:-)

Not really.
Did have my high pressure line for my power steering fail just as I was coming out of the I-10 tunnel in Mobile (heading west, so you have that 90 degree turn right there). Wrestled the car through the curve and pulled off somewhere after 65 (Theodore, maybe?).
The line had disconnected (and the connection end would not hold in place), so I got a screw clamp and rigged it and it held until I got home.

Mid 60's our family car needed a new alternator in Kittery, Maine. Barely made it to a full service gas station and met the mechanic there who was from New Iberia, LA and distant relative to dad. Fixed and gone in an hour.

On a family ski trip the car broke down in western Kansas (Chrysler) - family member had a friend with a Grand Cherokee that he let us borrow to get to Gunnison. We stayed in a motel that night and the temp dropped to like -35 F. The fricking thing completely froze up. A local mechanic towed the thing into his garage and let it thaw out. So two vehicles in one trip.

Those are some great stories. Could be a movie.

Was in Orange Beach with a bunch of my family (parents, grandparents, aunt's, uncle's, cousins), and I had a Honda Accord at the time. We were going out to eat one afternoon for lunch and I go to crank my car and battery is dead. No big deal, someone can jump me off and I'll go buy a battery. I reach to pop my hood and it pulls, but hood doesn't release. Then there's no tension on the release latch. The fricking release cable from the handle to the hood latch had snapped.
I spent hours on the hot concrete trying to figure out how to release that latch from underneath and there was just no way to reach it. Had to have it towed to the nearest Honda Dealership (this was a Saturday and no shop was open) that was nearly an hour away. $200 tow bill and $650 bill from the Honda service center and an entire day wasted I was not a happy camper. My mom felt bad and bought all my food the rest of the trip though.

My car broke down in Nowheresville, MS on the way back from an LSU@Auburn game with my 3 buddies. There magically happened to be ONE extended cab, platform tow truck in the area. We all rode back to BR with the driver
Some interesting conversations. He basically kept talking about how he just missed his monthly bonus because of us. They get bonuses based on number of tows, not distance.
ETA: actually The Boat was a part of this experience

We were driving a suburban back from Yellowstone on a Friday afternoon. Were on I-80 in Wyoming between Laramie and Cheyenne, almost exactly half way, when i noticed that the a/c compressor stopped and the dash gauges went dead. There was a single exit up ahead with a gas station at the top of a hill, so we pulled off. When we got to the gas station the engine died. And everything was dead.
We went inside and there were two guys there, the station attendant and a tow truck driver who had a large flatbed tow truck parked outside. We called our insurance for roadside assistance and the two guy said that if the insurance company was going to cover a tow, they would call him because he was the only tow on that stretch of highway. We went back to the Suburban and figured out that the battery was dead, and it looked like the problem was likely a dead alternator. I called dealerships and garages in Laramie and Cheyanne but no one would take us that late on a Friday afternoon, especially since either town was an hour away. After about a half hour the tow guy got the call so we put the suburban on the truck.
Tow guy said he knew a guy in Cheyenne who would probably help us out so we loaded the kids into the tow truck and took off for Cheyenne. We got to the outskirts of Cheyenne around 8:30, and pulled into a private garage full of stock race cars. There were guys replacing suspensions and doing all kind of stuff to these cars. It was the coolest garage I’d ever been to. Also spotless. The guy there that the tow driver called had run to AutoZone before it closed at 8:00 and picked up a new alternator. He swapped them out in about 20 minutes and hooked the battery to the charger. Car fired right up, ready to go. He had one of those little cube dongles for his iPhone and swiped my credit card. He charged cost for the alternator and $100 for his trouble. Totally fair deal. I would have paid twice that. And we went back on our merry way to Louisiana.

UGA roommate is on vacation with his family in Montana or Wyoming and the head gasket blows on his vehicle. Ended up buying a new car.

15 years ago a mobile mechanic changed either my alternator or starter in the parking lot of our rental condo in Orlando.
Not vacation but my car once died on the way to Fort Polk with the kids to see my husband. Called state farm roadside assistance- they could tow the car but no rental car places were open in Alexandria on Sunday. We waited in the subway at the gas station on some desolate exit while husband took a van off base unauthorized to come pick us up. We ended up having to go to Shreveport and buy a new car since replacing the transmission that died in my car was not worth it.

Driving from Memphis to Chattanooga in my old Accord. In BFE Mississippi (Ripley, MS, I believe it was) and not paying attention to the temperature gauge. Suddenly see white smoke coming out of the engine bay. Look down at the temp gauge and it’s all the way up to H.
I pull over and a heater core hose at the back of the engine had completely busted. Luckily, I was right near a gas station/shop combo. Some country baw pulled over and lent me some tools after I was able to procure a new hose and uni clamp. Loaded her back up with new coolant and I was on my way in less than an hour.

When I was a kid, we were on vacation out west. Start hearing a clicking from somewhere in the front end. Take it to a dealer in Albuquerque and sit around a hotel for three days while they try to find the source. Finally they say they can't find the cause, so don't go over 50 in case the wheel falls off. We crawl home across Texas at 50mph. When we get home, our local dealer finds a loose speedometer cable, tightens it up and no more clicking.

When I was younger, we road tripped in my father's Mazda B2200 truck. It had a camper shell, my parents road in the cab and my sister and I in the bed. We traveled all over the country like this.
The breakdown was we were on a gravel back country fire road in Grand Teton Wyoming. My father looked down to read a map and slipped off the road going 10mph. The truck rolled with my sister and I tumbling in the back like a clothes dryer. The truck thankfully landed upright and we were ok but the truck was trashed and our gear thrown everywhere. My mom actually took the worst of it and got lacerated pretty good by glass. We were just under 20 miles to a paved road. We camped at the truck that night.
Nobody came down the road that night or next morning. The truck ran but suspension was messed up so we decided to try our luck and limp it down the road. We made it back to paved road and found a gas station. My mom still had glass in her skin and I remember her pulling it out in the gas station bathroom.
We fixed suspension the next day, tie rod I think. Then we duct taped the shite out of the truck including missing passenger window. The camper shell was crushed but not only did we finish the vacation, we drove it back 1700 miles that way.
I loved that truck.

Grandparents take my two sisters and I on a trip throughout
the west. We stop at Colorado Springs and head to Pikes Peak. Get to the top and my grandfather locks the keys in the family truckster (Dodge Stationwagon). We get back to the car and my GD grabs a rock and tries to break the little window in the driver and front passenger side (can't remember the name of em). Can't break the damn thing. Parked next to us a man who saw our peril and reached in his trunk and pulled out a hammer. My GD breaks the window and off down the mountain we go. We get back to our motel room and he calls a local glass company, and we cruise on over to get the window replaced. We pull into the bay and in about an hour or so they fix it, and we are ready to roll. He backs out of the bay a side swipes the side of the building on the passenger side. My grandfather never showed us much anger in the time he was alive, but he could have cussed the pope after that escapade.

Leaving New Orleans one Sunday morning a few years back, my buddy curbed the car and popped a tire. We were getting ready to put the spare on when some dude rides up on a kids' bicycle with a Bud Light tall boy and a hydraulic jack. He let us use the jack, and we bought him breakfast at Perkins while we waited for the shop to put on a full size tire.

This was close to 20 years ago on our way to gulf shores with my girlfriend at the time. We left late so it was night time before we hit the tunnel. I was hearing a high pitched whistling noise, so I pulled over and checked the tires and saw nothing. Kept going, and a little while later heard a loud noise and felt like I hit a bump. Pulled over again and the tread had come off of the front driver side tire and half the tread came off the front passenger tire. Got towed to a tire shop and dropped it off. Got to the hotel around 2l10:30 that night. Woke up and caught a cab to the tire shop. Asked for alignment and new tires but the alignment person wasn't in. So I got 4 new tires and no more whistling. On the way back, coming out of the tunnel my truck started decreasing speed, pulled over and flames were shooting out the spaces in the rim. Put that out with water and got towed to Theodore. The spindle had gotten so hot that it bent and wasn't straight anymore. Fun time!
