My point is if your son wants to do this professionally, he may need to reconsider the college thing so he can get his Paramedic license.

Lots of full time departments will send him for free if he can get on one somewhere. Usually just involves taking the local Civil Service Test and a Physical Ability Test where he will have to hit a benchmark for stuff like push ups, sit ups, mile run, etc.

Once those are cleared, it's an interview process and if they hire, they'll hire on a probationary status and send the person to Fire College and EMT School. That's the route I went back in the day.

Did both. Went to the Air Force straight out of high school. Did 4 years, left went to plants for a about 6 months, I got hired on at a FD. FD is the best job in the world. But, low pay is the biggest issue, find a dept. that has good benefits (esp. health insurance) I am 25yrs in and getting close to retirement and I don't regret it at all....the only thing i would advise, is work for a fire protection district and not a municipality, it seems they are always fighting a mayor that wants to cut first responders....

Tell him to go into the Air Force and enter the pipeline for being a PJ. That’s some real shite. PJs are some of our most elite forces.

Educate your son. This is verifiably false, especially if he is going to have scholarships.

He'll spend most of his time blocking traffic for wrecks or helping old people off the floor. Might get to put out a small fire once or twice a month.

Admirable but I can’t handle the old folks and their welfare checks.
I have a family friend who’s kid is a FF/EMT

This and the responding to ODs & suicides were also mentioned.

Colorado is where that guy is.

Texas is in excellent state for the fire service.

24/48 or 49/96 are the most common schedules these days.

You accumulate friends and stories more than anything.

If you make it to 25+ yrs you retire a multi millionaire. Current retirees at my dept(LA), retiring at 50-55yo+live another 20yrs will make around 2million in retirement.

False.. You would have to be the fire chief for 25 years, then maybe if the investment interest rates were stupid highly favorable of your money, AND you prenup’d the first marriage before the divorce. And if you don’t have kids. Lol This isn’t happening strictly with fire service money.

Haven’t seen what most others have stated but I’ll give my $0.02.

If he truly wants to go that route have him start getting his Basic EMT certification. Takes about 1 semester of school to get it done and should be fairly easy if he is as smart as you say. While doing this he will have to go on ride-outs with an ambulance crew for anywhere from 12-24 hrs. Have him see if he can get in with some of those guys to ride out on the actual fire engine as week. Maybe a month or so of ride outs and he will know if that’s what he truly wants to do or not.

Make sure he understands you don’t do the job for money. That’s what you have a 2nd and/or 3rd job for. You do this job to help people in need. In doing so he will risk his physical and mental health. Depending on where he works (and I can’t overstate that enough) he will get pretty good benefits such as vacation time, insurance, and retirement. He will make some of the best friends he’s ever had, and meet some of the biggest POS he’s ever met. Being in TX there are a lot of great departments to go work for that are hiring, especially around the outskirts of Dallas.

Biggest thing is making sure that is the career path that he truly wants to embark upon. It’s not a job that you think you want to do, and then get into it 5-7 yrs down the line and figure out you hate it and it’s time to find something else to do. That does nothing but waste everybodies time, but more importantly wastes your sons time in retirement money he will never see. Hope it works out for him!

Tell me you know absolutely nothing about being a firefighter, without saying you know absolutely nothing about being a firefighter…

FF/Medic has a very high suicide and substance abuse rate.

Noble profession however

do them baws a favor and stay there a couple of times to teach them how to cook it, one of the biggest myths out there is that firemen make the best chili, they make the worst attempts at chili known in chili-dom

You had to be pranked with a can of Hormel or something. Lol
I know a few seasoned firemen that could outcook any famous chef from any tv show when it comes to home cookin. Breakfast or dinner. You name the meal.

Ok….I guess the 100s of retired firemen I know, which most never made chief, are liars or are suffering from schizophrenia.

A couple of my associates left other careers because they felt called to be fire fighters. They all made it less than 3 years. They didn’t fight fires as a job. They diverted traffic, responded to OD’s or the same illegal immigrants house because they didn’t want to go to the hospital due to fear of deportation, ect, etc…. For $50k a year

I think it’s probably more likely that you have schizophrenia or are lying.

My brother became a firefighter at 20, he's 50 now looking to retire with an $800k drop and he pulls in 6 figures now as a lieutenant. There are worse occupations
