Any F-250 6.4L diesel owners have issues with engine due to emissions control?

I found a used 2008 F-250 XLT with 72,000 miles that I would use to pull a heavy camper, tractor and farm equipment. My research shows the Particle Diesel Filter and EGR cause a lot of major problems with performance and expensive engine repairs. By the way this engine has a turbo booster.

Anyone of you good baws ever own one of these diesels and tried using one of the delete kits out there that removes this emissions equipment. I currently live in MS and there are no vehicle inspections so I don’t think there will be a problem with big brother.

One other major issue I uncovered in my research is that there are no truck nuts included.

Thanks in advance for any pro tips.

Yes delete dpf right away. Dont put a hot tune on the truck and make sure cab mounts always stay good.

The 6.0 and the 6.4 engines ended the relationship between Ford and International. I had a 2007 6.0 and it helped me hone my wrenching skills. I would look for a used 6.7 and pass on the 6.4

Deleting is an option but I’m pretty sure you can’t trade it at a dealer if you decide to do that later. Just my opinion.

I had one a long time ago, no major problems up to 140k miles when I sold it. I’ve had two 6.7s since and it’s a way better motor.

The 6.0

I had an F-250 with that engine and it was a piece of junk, bought it(2006) new thinking I'd drive it till either it or I died, little did I know I'd outlive that POS by a long shot, spent enough repairing(engine,) between 100-120k to pay cash for a new F-150(gas,) before I pulled the plug, was a King Ranch too, shittiest quality leather I have ever seen in a vehicle

Why not tune after the delete kit and did you ever remove EGR equipment? Any significant issues after removing PDF?

Good point on the trade in. This motor sounds like junk but reading some old forums where deleting some emissions seemed to be a good workaround

Wouldn’t touch a 6.4. A deleted 6.0 that’s well maintained will last, but even when deleting a 6.4 it’s a ticking bomb.

Twin turbo booster actually. I'm no expert but many people in the powerstroke world deem the 6.4 as the worse engine ever made. It has been called a band aid to get the F-250 from the 6.0 failures to the all new Ford 6.7. With that being said, the 6.0 is a strong motor if deleted and studded properly.

You can tune, just don’t go stupid like some people do to squeeze out everything you can

Navistar had a contract with Ford to produce powerstroke engines. When 2008 rolled around emissions standards changed Navistar needed to supply Ford with a compliant engine. The thing was Ford didnt pay for a number of the 6.0 engines produced because of them not meeting quality standards, so as a big middle finger to Ford, Navistar bought the design for the 6.4 from Renault and produced it.

With the 6.4 the cylinder heads are the biggest problem with valve guide tolerances not being in spec and water jackets in the rear of the heads cracking causing it to burn coolent. Also common to see wrist pins break off the piston and send a rod through the block when running a hot tune. Dont walk away from a 6.4, run.

One of the worst decisions I've ever made in my life, and I've been to jail plenty of times. Don't even bother thinking about it. I spent more fixing my truck than I paid for the fricking thing. This was four years ago, and I'd bet the guys at Tri-care still remember that truck

The 6.4 powersteoke is the worst diesel engine to ever be put in a light pickup, and that's impressive considering it followed the 6.0 powerstroke. Stay away.
