I just bought this daguerreotype at an estate sale and am trying to identify what (if any) the occupation of this gentleman is. I don't think it's a pocket watch or a pocket sextant but I have no idea. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Absolutely correct!

That's the handle of a slave slapper. This guy was likely a plantation owner.

After studying this photograph, I have come to the conclusion this gentleman has no job.

That's an early speculum.

You need to get out more oftener.

I researched all replies - I'm fairly certain it's not a slave whip, a speculum, or scale. All good thoughts however. The search continues.

I think it is that thing from the Indiana Jones movie that when placed on the staff, opened up the crypt of the ark of the covenant.

Is the name of the person or the photographer anywhere on the front or back?
