I'm not BRPD but we've got cars with over 200k miles in our fleet and when they die they are not getting replaced. It is bad.

It's all computers now; very little pure mechanics involved. They don't have a use for dinosaurs like me.

Meh, I know they have a couple of BRPD officers who live in Erwinville. Haven't seen any that live out as far as False River. The Miles certainly add up, but I'd think the city streets of BR- like Govt street for example- do more damage to the cars than the officers commute home.

But that's all the taxpayer's money being wasted right? I mean they should LIVE WITHIN THEIR MEANS LIKE YOU SAID RIGHT?

But it's ok if a couple of cops live out by you in Erwinville to waste those precious taxpayer dollars on fuel and maintenance. Cops driving cars home use taxpayer fuel. How much of that is wasted?

Right?

Pick a side of the argument and stick with it.

take a breath little guy an calm down. Nothing in my post condones the use of the units in its current form. I neither agreed with the practice or took exception to it. I'm more skeptical of a BRPD officer living all the way in PC.
And I don't really give much of a shite as to where the cops live- near me or elsewhere.

yes

I think the cops are charged for personal use of the unit. But maybe not. If they aren't, then yes they should be. I have not idea of how much taxpayer money is wasted on a cop's commute. I'd bet the shitty streets in BR take more of a toll on the funds then fuel. Nothing inconsistent in my opinion. Sorry.

The question is whether the taxpayers are best served when officers take a vehicle home, or parked them in a secured lot?

I don't have the answer, but maybe someone here does.

You have the cost of fuel and wear and tear versus the expense of the lot and appropriate security.

I could see a savings if officers brought their vehicles home, but only if more were in the parish than outside the parish.

Also in many neighborhoods in EBR a police vehicle parked in the driveway might help neighborhood security.

I saw a news story this morning inviting "those interested in working for BRPD" to a website to start the application process. I can't see how anyone would be excited about doing that.

Honestly until recently I was looking at relocating to BR and transferring to BRPD. But damn with SWB being mayor I would feel like I would waste everything I've accomplished in my career so far going to BRPD

In a larger city which I been retired for around 10 yrs depending on your job title you drove to your district, paid 15 minutes to dress in uniform, had what essentially roll call with a short description of hey look out for this narc, gang unit, or auto theft looking for this person. Then you and your partner hit your service area.

The 4th shift allowed overlap so you always had shifts on duty. This takes a large amount of officers which BRPD does not have that luxury.

Some divisions or "job titles" drive their cars home. My division we did not due to we saw 110% more crime that BRPD and I myself probably done more pit moves to save lives in 1 yr than most BRPD officers have done in their career. We did have a reason to park the cars so the mechanics could Service the vehicles.

Now some divisions did not put as much hard wear and tear on their vehicles so they could drive them home.

In my division it took along time to be promoted to sgt. We had a lot of talent at the time I served. Now I do not know if it has changed or what the manpower is of the dept I retired from. This also gave us a lot more experienced officers riding with green officers.

Yes, BRPD districts are spread out way to far.
Should they not bring their assigned units home? Until they can get more vehicles in the fleet maybe they should.
Before they do it should they learn how to staff correctly for shift changes? Yes
Will it be a culture change? Yes
Do they have the experience inside the dept to do it at this time? Probably not.
Would it be a cluster? Probably if you make drastic changes to the way things are done within the dept.

You have to look at all the facts.
Can it be done? Yes
Should it be looked at correctly and rolled out correctly? Yes
At this time the dept does not have the staff or setup to do it! That what needs to be fixed before you do anything else.

Go live in Ascension and work as a deputy for Sheriff Wiley. You won't have to deal with SWB and Wiley is the man.

Rocket, I've been under the impression that numbers in BRPD have slid for awhile.

IMHO, I have thought we were understaffed, we needed to raise pay and our people worked too much OT and too many side jobs.

I think we have not put a real emphasis in improving our force and this started way before Broome.

Am I right or way out there?

How's Ascension Parish? Honestly I've visted family and such back in Louisiana. I haven't lived there in a very long time.
What's the crime like? Would a LEO be able to stay busy like BRPD? Is there a lot of opportunities to move up and/or around?

Ascension is turning into a mini-Baton Rouge in the sense that most of the restaurants and stores that bring people to BR have now put locations in Ascension. There are tons of new neighborhoods going up in Prairieville, putting you 10-15 minutes from Baton Rouge should you want to go into BR and the cost of living is significantly cheaper than BR.

Ascension doesn't see anywhere near the amount of violent crime that BRPD does, but they have more than enough everyday bullshite like theft, burglaries, etc. I can't imagine you'll be bored, especially seeing as how quickly it's growing with people fleeing BR. As for opportunities to move up, I can't answer that.

I live in BR and am not an officer, but if you really want to get back in the Baton Rouge area, I'd at least give it a look. I know LSU PD was looking for people too, but if you actually like staying busying, you'll be bored as shite driving around campus waiting for another hit and run call to come in.

It's a happening parish that's moving up. Lots of white flight moving into the parish.

Not tolerated all like BR and Nola.

Yes. Jeff Wiley lets his deputies do their jobs and doesn't do shite to handcuff them at all like Mitch Landrieu and Broome has.

That's something you will have to ask them about but in my opinion, Ascension Sheriff is the best law enforcement agency in the state of Louisiana. It's the most competent, professional, honest, clean and hard working law enforcement agency in the state. Wiley demands excellence from his deputies but he takes good care of them if they're professionals that gives great service and doesn't be a corrupt frickhead that embarrasses the badge or the people they serve.

The way the districts are spread out, shift rotations do not overlap with 4 instead of 3 shifts keeps a shift on the road while the other is in shift change meeting, and the amount of coverage the officers have in a district seem to make it harder. If I am correct they have time to do paperwork which means they still have to take calls before xyz shift comes on. Means they really are still doing rounds during busy times.

So are you saying BRPD does have overlapping shifts or they don't? Asking for a friend planning a bank robbery.

They need to walk more, it's healthier. And learn to ride motorcycles, less expensive.
