I don’t think that’s accurate in Louisiana

LSU is looking for every single reason to kill fraternities. It's especially accurate there.

You sound like a victim of getting balled. Did you get balled or just never received a bid?

This is not an issue with Greek life as a whole. It’s typically the dork frats who drink kids to death. This article says he didn’t get into most so joined this one, and the max gruver case was a frat with a bunch of misfits.

Male societies are probably as old as time - and so is hazing. It brings people together.

Peter Pan syndrome is a real problem in the west.

We have young men, even men into their forties, who never grew up - never learned how to be a man.

They don't know how to take care of themselves, but they don't know how to take care of other people either, and they don't understand that they have responsibilities to the people around them.

They're islands of child like selfishness.

The man-child is a modern phenomenon that started to emerge in the 1940s. And it happened about the same time, that the rituals of manhood were killed off, and the societies that taught boys how to be men, were stamped out.

If you look back at what native tribes did in America, you can see a good example of these pathways worked.

When a boy reached a certain age, he was separated from his mother, and received the basic training needed to be a functioning adult member of the tribe, and then he went through a harrowing, a ceremony that tested his capacity to endure.

This ceremony had a spiritual element, may have included hallucegenic drugs, but most importantly, it was held by the men, and it marked the end of childhood, and his entrance into manhood.

Almost all of that is gone now in our culture.

The church is dead, the military thoroughly corrupted, institutions like the Boy Scouts, they're on their way out.

Fraternities still exist, and if you're lucky, provide you with hardship and bonding. But those opportunities are rarer and rarer now, as universities crack down on them.

I agree with LSU being anti frat, but I don’t think taboo is the right word to describe drinking in Louisiana

So did they single out just this one pledge to drink a handle? Seems odd. There should have been more doing so if that was the case and there would have been 1-2 alcohol poisonings as well.

Seems more likely due to drinking than hazing.

Absolutely. If the kid had just as much to drink and ended up in his dorm room, we’d never have heard about it.

I'm saying it's taboo for underage frat kids to drink at LSU. There was a poster here that said he went to visit his old frat having a tailgate party at the parade grounds and all the underage kids were ducking out of sight and shooting hard liquor. He said those were the ones that were fricked up the most. If you take away the crushing grip you've got on these kids, they're less likely to go to extremes.

I had a great time in my fraternity at South Carolina. I'm still tight with most of my pledge brothers today. That being said, these kinds of drinking games are idiotic. If you want to make a kid do air chairs while reciting the fraternity creed, or clean your room or be the designated driver for drunk and annoying sorority girls, I've got zero issue with that. That won't kill you. Drinking a handle of Jack Daniels in a few hours can kill you.

It's taboo to them which makes it more dangerous.

No its not, I just told you why they do that. Undercover cops hand out MIPs and fraternity tailgates are easy targets. Pledges typically wear different clothes than the actives and if a pledge gets an MIP Greek Life will get involved. They aren't going to do anything if an active member gets one.

I mean, if the entire Greek system disappeared tomorrow, would anyone actually miss it?
