That was tough to watch... Only thing I can ask is when the dude was crawling why did he reach back behind himself (or near his hip. back pocket, whatever) with his right hand?
Is having the perp crawl towards you SOP? Maybe they were trying to get him further away from the door to the room since they kept asking who else is in there. Seems they could have had him lay flat with his hands behind his head and then approach and cuff him like normal.
To clarify, Im not defending the cop in any manner, just asking.

Pulling up his shorts that were falling down. He instinctually grabbed them to pull up and it cost his life.

Were his pants falling down or slipping? Seems like natural instinct to reach back there, especially when drunk, scared, and confused.

Everything you say is true, but the bottom line is when the guy reached behind him, the shooting is a clean shoot.
Even if we think "should have used better judgement there" and I DO think the LEO should have used better judgement. THat is not the standard , the standard is "would a reasonable person have reason to fear for their life?" and yes, a reasonable person would have reason to fear when a person reached for the small of their back in that situation. Thus , it's a justified shooting.
The jury did a good job recognizing that here.

But he DID die. It doesn't matter now. If he had laid perfectly still the cop would probably be in jail right now instead of free. You can't shoot somebody because they lay still instead of following your orders. Then again, who knows anymore.

The cop clearly told him go ignore all of his instincts. That's a totally possible thing for someone drunk in a hotel in the middle of the night to do.
