Annual reminder that you suck at giving gifts

Just give them exactly what they ask for
Summary: You very badly over-estimate your intrinsic ability to choose suitable gifts for friends and family. The vast majority of gifts you buy end up not being used (and/or enough) and are wasted both in terms of your economic activities in acquiring/giving the gifts, but also leaving your friends and family stuck storing shite they don't want or need for periods of time. Cash is a bad substitute b/c people are emotional and bend to societal expectations accordingly, so the most efficient gift (cash) is out.
The solution to (1) avoiding wasted economic activity while still (2) appeasing the base level emotional reaction is simple: ask people what they want and give them that.
quote:
The economic costs of disappointing gifts don’t just include the lost value from unwanted gifts, but also the time and frustration of handling returns—on top of the original disappointment. Your friend or relative either doesn’t know you as well as they think or didn’t take the time to figure it out. Stress and hurt feelings are actual costs—they’re just hard to quantify.
Economists have a term for the negatives caused by unwanted gifts: deadweight loss, which is a loss that is not offset by gains to anyone else. In a normal transaction, all parties to the transaction are better off because they made the transaction. Otherwise, they wouldn’t make the deal in the first place.
quote:
When buying for someone else, though, even someone we know very well, there is a pretty strong likelihood that we won’t be able to predict the recipient’s preferences as well as she would. So we end up with significant deadweight loss each holiday season as gifts are given that aren’t fully valued by their new owners.
quote:
In any exchange, including gift giving, there are at least two sets of utility involved: the recipient’s and the giver’s. And, while holiday gift giving is more like a transfer than what we think of as an exchange, both utilities should be included.
Money is an approximation of value. It’s not exactly what we mean, but it’s close enough to be exceedingly useful for exchanges. However, when exchanging or gift giving with those we are close to, many more values are in play than simply the value of the gift.

Luckily all my gift recipients are going to be jazzed about this gift:

Or just stop giving everyone gifts. Seriously.
My wife and I are only getting gifts for each other this year.

Most of the people I exchange make an Amazon list, it does make shopping easier.
I also try to pay attention throughout the year though and make notes of things people say they'd like.

Someone gives me a gift, I say thank you. What kind of fricknut gets upset over receiving a present, even if it’s a terrible gift? Spoiled bunch of pricks. We have it too good as a society. Nature needs to inflict its wrath upon us, and my vote would be a plague.

yeah my siblings and I stopped this after 2013 when we all basically exchanged Amazon gift cards. the kids chip in for a gift for mom usually, but she's very clear about what she wants so it's easy.
i also am not a cheapskate. i buy shite for friends and the gf all the time. like my old friend had shitty knives after i moved out and after an LSU party at his house with inferior blades i bought him a new chef's knife.

Wife and I wanted to upgrade from our bottom line 3 year old roomba (RIP) to the new badass self-emptying one.
1000 retail is a little more than I wanted to spend just for shits and gigs so when my parents asked me what we wanted for christmas, I told them that we were planning to buy this specific roomba model, but that it was too expensive for them to just buy it (was 1000 at the time) so we'd appreciate cash to go towards the new roomba purchase.
Well cybermonday rolls around and they are on sale for 700 and I can buy it and bring it home now as opposed to ordering it from amazon and having it sit unattended on my porch for several hours. I inform my parents that we bought the roomba, giving them confidence that their money would be going to the intended purchase and not just booze and drugs.
Mom got upset because she already bought us the cheaper roomba and now one of us has to deal with returning it. Like damn I wasn't trying to trick y'all when I answered the question "What do you want for Christmas?"

My Bills fandom is not a schtick, buddy. I would advise finding another chump to troll on this sports message board

Sir, could you please refrain from derailing this holiday themed thread. I am sure Mr. Slow would appreciate that. Goodbye
Posted on 12/18/19 at 5:58 pm to Josh Allen
Please stop. I like the Bills right now but you’re making me hate them
Posted on 12/18/19 at 5:59 pm to Upperdecker
That sounds like personal problem, friend. Please seek guidance from a clergy member or a confidant. Thanks

Erroneous! Erroneous on all accounts!! Josh Allen a dual threat QB, and has a cannon for an arm.

Ugly wife and kids. I'd say legit upstate NY Bills fans.
