This is bigly true in south Louisiana. Not so much elsewhere.

People down there list their high school on their resume 10+ years post graduation

I shouldn't be surprised you're trying to defend that ridiculous comparison, and yet somehow I am. Good schools have an actual impact on your future. Travel ball does not for 99.9999999999999999999999999%

Except he doesn't even do multiplication tables yet. He just learned to read.

He's still adding and subtracting with the visual aid of those red sticks.

He probably still believes in Santa Claus.

The worst is the overuse of “kid”.

“Get a rip, kid.”
“You got this, kid.”

Travel ball mom is the worst offender.

I'm pretty sure most kids will look back on their time spent playing ball and making close friends during the years as good memories and glad they had the experiences. I think few look back and wish, man i wish my parents saved their monies and playing fortnight 60 more hours a month.

Not in BR. My oldest's coach decided he no longer wanted to coach (rec league) the team. So we were scrambling to find a new team. One of the local tournament/travel teams had an opening so inquired about it. Said the tournaments weren't too far away, hammond might have been the farthest they go. I think he said they played in 5 or so tournaments. Dues were $1800. That didn't include the matching bat bags, uniforms, etc... which he said was around $500. $2300 for fricking baseball for an 8 year old. I asked my son how much he liked baseball and he said "medium" so that definitely made the choice easy. I called him up and politely declined.

there are plenty of other teams in BR that are way less than that and some that are more.

quote:

I loathe what travel ball has done to youth sports. When i was a kid, it was rec league, then school sports. None of this travel shite. Now it's an arms race of who can spend the most money on sports teams. And it isn't just baseball. It's basketball, soccer, swim, cheerleading. Baseball started this money grab and every youth sport after has copied it.

na soccer and cheerleading has been like this for way longer.

and cool you liked the way it was as a kid, things change just like it was different for you then your father. and different for him than his father.

and you dont have to spend anything. teach your kid yourself, play rec ball, teach your kid how to hit and pitch from youtube, teach them how to eat and lift from youtube and then let them go out and make the HS team

its possible to do that, but gonna take a lot of work on your part.

but if your kid doesnt even liek it that much, why not just stay in rec and play for fun?

is the idea of spending 8k on a destin beach trip sort of stupid?

I'm going to destin next week, and it isn't $8k. What do you do in Destin that costs that much?

is the idea of spending 6k on a disney trip sort of stupid?

Disney is more than 6k.

is the idea of spending 12k a year for private tuition vs public school sort of stupid?

In the grand scheme of life, we put education on a much higher pedestal than elementary school age sports.

i need you to detail me all the ideas of stupid before i spend another 15k+ next year on baseball and softball.

Travel sports. I find it all stupid. Enjoy spending every moment of every weekend at the ballpark. If you want to drop 2-3k for 7-8 year old sports, go for it. I will save my money for vacations.

Maybe i'm different, but i don't recall many moments playing sports when i wasn't in high school. But i do have many fond memories of family vacations, so much so that i'm recreating those with my family. Maybe you're a baller and can afford $2500 per kid per sport and still go on vacations any time you want. I am not. We spend our money on private school and Disney (going in the winter) and Destin.

On second thought, probably better to keep him involved in sports. A white collar job is not in his future.

go white water rafting as a team if you can too

dollywood was great

you're talking importance and i'm talking about the quality of money spent. Spending money on schools doesn't guarantee anything IN A LOT OF SITUATIONS of schools in a lot of our areas. You can end up at LSU very equally going to St Pauls or Fountainebleu or mandeville or name your school. You can go to Fountainebleu and prioritize schooling and be a fricking wizard if that's the parents priorities.

gotta find a local hitting instructor during my time there so cayden doesn't miss a beat. people go rent boats, go on a fishing trip, book a type of house or certain condo on a beach. Go out to eat 3 times could be $800. All sorts of ways to piss money down the toilet.

Thanks buddy. Opening ceremonies suck huh? What about skill competitions? Worth it? We are all staying in a complex with a bunch of nice cabins so lots of family and team activities and will likely cook out meals there most of the week.

Appreciate the review baw.
