Maybe just do your job you a-hole. On top of everything else you make everybody die hungry. Jerk.
When you die you shite your pants. He was trying to let the men die with some dignity.

The Empress of Ireland Disaster
Quite a few people since have lost their lives diving the wreck. It's in very dangerous waters.

However, more passengers (840) died on the Empress than on either Lusitania (786), or Titanic (817).
Yep, its interesting how history rewards some and leaves others behind for dead.
Thats one reason some youtube channels are very interesting to me as they explore some of the less popular events that were equally as devastating.

At first, the Sophia wasn’t taking on water and Captain Locke hoped the ship could float free off the reef at high tide. He reassured the passengers that they would be able to get off the reef, and not to panic. As for the rescue efforts, he did not want to risk lives in such rough water. Passengers waited through October 24th to the 25th for their rescue. Some wrote letters. Some were hopeful, while others were unsure of the true circumstances they were in.
Tough call for the Captain, but in hindsight it looks bad.

Yeah, imagine being stranded on a ship, on a tiny rock islet for more than a day, you can see rescue ships around you, but none can approach.
That little rock with the light on it in the middle of the fjord is Vanderbilt Reef.

Same. I've fallen into some YouTube blackholes learning about things.
The Eastland Disaster in 1915 is another lesser known event where 848 people perished. Western Electric employees and their families were going to a picnic in Indiana when the boat capsized at its dock on the Chicago River.
Incidentally, George Halas was listed among the deceased as he was supposed to attend the picnic, but he arrived at the dock late after rescue efforts were already underway.

I ask myself if I would have done it, or just brought my guys safely to the dock saying, "I'm not the Coast Guard, my guy."

The Princess Sophia wreck is super fascinating, would make for a good movie. 340 perished, it sat on a rock floundering all night.

The Princess Sophia was the one off the coast of Juneau, AK.
The Sultana was a steamboat on the Mississippi near Memphis.

Yep, I had never heard of it prior to a youtube vid.
Lots of interesting and strange things fall under the radar.

And they asked the Anderson, who had just made it to safety, through all that, to go back out and search for survivors - and they did.
Here’s the Anderson heading into the harbor in Duluth on November 10, 2020.

Now we all know where the love of God goes,
when legend is told by a poet...
The brine and the waves only bury the dead,
when 29 souls lay below it...
