I've been looking at this off and on for a few years.
What's the farthest you've reached?
On my mother's side, I've gotten to 6th great-grandfather in two branches.
On my dad's side, I've gotten to a 4th great-grandfather. The biggest hole is after my father's paternal grandmother. She died nearly 20 years before he was born, and nothing has shown up in the years I've been dabbling with this.
Neither side of my family has kept a good record of lineage.
DNA says I'm clearly southern.

Did you find family you didn’t know about?
Did you do the DNA part of it?

Late 1600s for me.
You can steal from other people's trees. Most of the work is already done.

A lot of it is wrong.

My oldest daughter joined up and between the two of us and work from others we’ve been able to track a good bit of the tree...pretty interesting stuff

If you are part Native American (no matter how little) you can be a Senator from Massachusetts and be a presidential nominee

To each his own but I never really concerned myself with that stuff. I am here now and trying to live my life. Not interested in who came from where a long time ago

Personally I have found a lot of really cool stuff. A great great grandfather KIA as a police officer in early 1900s, letters from my family to General Sherman's command, french colonial records that showed an ancestor survived the Natchez Indian massacre of 1727, french passports from the old world, then jumping the pond to go back to early 1600s France.
Some people don't like that sort of stuff but I find it fascinating.

I’m surprised there’s enough data to determine that. As far as I know, I don’t think I have an ancestor born in another state besides Louisiana. I’d love to see what mine showed.

I didn't send in any DNA but I got back to my 7th great-grandfather.

I’ve gotten really far back, but part of my family actually printed a book at some point that traces 1 side of my family back to Ireland and France. My DNA profile matched the data I had - I’ve always been super interested in it - more so since I lost my parents young.

Seems like every person I’ve known who’s done a family tree claims some relation to a famous person.
I did a dna test through National Geographic and it came back mostly German, Dutch, and best of all 5% West African
