I don't really mind outside kids coming on Halloween as long as they're respectful. The ones I hate are when the Trick R Treating is done and they show up after 9 pm and we've already put the kids to bed

No. Not unless the HOA maintains the roadways in the neighborhood. If they're public, they have no say in who can and can't use the roads

Ok, well, the OP says volunteers will check, not hired and permitted police. So, your point is moot.

You can have a say in who can come on your property, though.

I think people have more of an issue with the parents and non-kids that come around asking for candy. Or the greedy kids who grab two handfuls of candy out of the bowl because they weren't raised right. It's an entitlement issue.

Turning off the lights doesn’t work? That’s the universal signal.

dead serious. Every year there are always a handful that have the gaul to walk up to a dark house @9PM and ring the door bell. Both my kids just falling asleep. Dogs finally able to relax.

I don’t even bother to answer the door and just tell them over my front door camera, “Halloween is over. Go home”

Try telling this to some of the lunatics off the LSU campus who try to block people from parking in front of their houses (on a public street) on game day.

I don't know a single thing at all about this situation other than what I read in the OP and skimming responses for about 20 seconds.

This quote sounds good but we don't know the actual circumstances happening that's led to thsi. In your personal experience, you've mentioned being in a rural area and outside kids come in and everyone has a great time. That's great! But that may not be the case here. Maybe it's a bunch of badass little shitheads disrupting things for everyone else. Maybe there are shite parents dropping their offspring off at he front of the neigborhood then leaving and coming to get them a few hours later. Maybe it's not kids at all but older teens instead who only want to deplete the candy and throw pumpkins.

Logically speaking there HAS to be something going on that's led to this. Do I agree with it in principle? NO. But I'm also not a homeowner there, and I fully support homeowners in a neighborhood wanting what's best for their community.

While letter in OP might be fake, we have a neighborhood street here in Louisville called Hillcrest (public street) that goes all out for Halloween and thousands of people from all over go to check out the decorations and pick up candy.

For the first time this year they're ticketing the area. They're going to allow 5,000 folks to walk the street and collect candy. LMPD is going to barricade the area and it will be walking traffic only. It had really gotten out of hand the last couple of years with kids almost getting hit.

LMPD and the Councilmember over the area agreed that it could be closed for public safety's sake. Tickets will be free but can only be obtained during the time of the closure (can't be obtained in advance).

quote:

For the first time, Hillcrest Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic between Frankfort Avenue and Brownsboro Road to ensure a safer experience for families and visitors on Halloween night.

Known locally as “Halloween Street”, Hillcrest Avenue has become a popular destination. The tradition began decades ago as a friendly competition between neighbors to outdo one another with creative and spooky decorations. Today, many homes along the street decorate their yards extravagantly with graveyards, skeletons, animatronics, themed sets, and lights.

“I’m excited to sponsor this year’s event,” said Councilman Owen. “The safety of our community is extremely important, and by officially closing the street and adding LMPD officers, we can ensure families enjoy a stress-free evening filled with some scares and family fun.”

This year’s event will take place on Friday, October 31, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., rain or shine. Visitors are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to United Crescent Hill Ministries.

To help maintain a safe environment, LMPD officers will patrol the area throughout the evening. In addition, free entry tickets will be required to access Hillcrest Avenue on Halloween night. Tickets will be available at the Frankfort Avenue and Brownsboro Road entrances only. Mid-street entry will not be permitted due to safety and staffing considerations.

Yes, you are. So am I. So is SFP. Because we all know that it’s overwhelming nons from outside this community ruining trick or treating for the overwhelmingly non Hispanic whites who enjoy the comforts of living in a HOA controlled neighborhood.

For OP's discussion:

- I miss having Trick or Treaters. I live on a busier road and houses on both sides of me are typically not giving out candy because they're curmudgeonly old folks or have kids of age that they go out. For 3-4 houses down on both sides. So we're in a desert. I'd love to have some kids visit but I get it.

- Trunk and Treat has ruined door to door for a lot of neighborhoods that aren't "the" neighborhood in the area to visit. I don't think this can be underestimated.

- I had to go to other neighborhoods to Trick or Treat growing up because majority of my parent's neighborhood when I was that age were older folks who turned off the lights and didn't put candy out. We'd hit my Grandmother's street and the close neighbors then head out. But we were respectful when we went other places. And we just put the candy up at the house until we were home (yes, kids and parents were taking "all" the candy left out unattended even in the 80s/90s).

- I've also lived in an area where people tried to take advantage, so I understand wanting to curtail issues. It seems a bit extreme though.

- On the upside, our area does a Trick or Treat event the Friday before Halloween in the downtown area that is well attended and the business I work for had a table at the event to hand out candy so I at least got to do that.

I’m almost certain there will be clues you can pick up on.
But then again, maybe not.
Never a perfect plan.
Personally don’t have that problem. Our neighborhood houses are 115 ft from the road and each house is around 120 ft from each other.
Trick-or-treaters don’t waste there time walking here.
