But seriously, is there anything we can do to get a certain portion of the population to stop using the ER as their primary care physicians?

Yes, deport them immediately.

Those type of people go to the hospital for every damn thing under the sun

The ER I use to work at tracked how many times these people came to the ER over the past year. Normally we would bump them all the way to the bottom unless it was truly an emergency.

I know some hospitals have started having a "fast track" section in the ER for these type patients.

Yes, make them pay the bill.

Dont treat them. Healthcare isn’t a right.

1. Limit MCaid coverage of ER visits to medically necessary and limit them to once per week
2. When not medically necessary, let the hospitals bill the Pt.

Of course hospitals won’t support this because MCaid pays them for every recipient that walks throught the door.

A wall or other entry deterrent would help.

Yes, make them pay the bill. Illegals and Medicaid do not care because they aren't paying a damn thing.

The problem with the idea of denying them service is that the one time one of them comes into the ER with a legitimate issue and the staff tells them to frick off, that hospital will be sued out of existence.

That’s wrong. They get paid, but they end up losing money on it bc Medicaid only pays part of their costs. A lot of the costs go to the patients and therefore are never paid. BR General closed its emergency department in North BR for this exact reason

using ER as a primary care giver is VERY prevalent and costly to taxpayers. the people who do this are also quite litigious. imagine that!!!’ I have seen people come to ER for contraception and simple headaches. it has gotta stop. but EMTALA puts the hospitals at risk for turning them away. catch 22.

Easy answer is to empower hospitals to make judgement calls and deny service and refer them to walk-in clinics. Shield them with some sort of reasonable protections from lawsuits if proper triage showed they didn’t need obvious hospital treatment. Poof, it ends overnight and all the sudden healthcare is cheaper for everyone

If ERs charged just one dollar a lot of people wouldn’t go for their sniffles or other benign complaints. We should really do a triage as required by law and when it’s determined it’s not emergent charge a cash fee. Some ERs do this already.
