American culture has been replaced with the fake reality that Netflix and Amazon prime have foisted upon us- that our country is half lesbian, trans, minorities and evil white people.

With the demise of Disney I think we’ll see the forced wokeness slowly decline. Very slowly. People are sick of it.

It's the corporations, man!

Seriously, it's the corporations consolidating and controlling what is available and new and hot.

People just want something to be angry and victimized about now. Life is too easy that it makes it hard.

I’ve been noticing this profoundly lately. Under 40 sense of humor: nosedive.

Had this conversation with the wife tonight. We came to the conclusion that culture died(not peaked) around 2003. I blame social media.

I wonder how my kids are going to view this subject in 20 years. Are they going to be nostalgic about 2024 in the same way I am about 1995?

I have America as my title on Pandora. All the music from that era plays. I listen to it everyday and the nostalgia pangs hit me hard at times. We were so blessed back then. Even have my youngest daughter (no pics) on board. She tells me "Daddy, yall's music was the best".

It’ll be digital nostalgia. A yearning for old Tik Tok trends, sounds, dances. I’m 100% serious.

What’s sad is their memories will be isolated and lonely. I can reminisce about playing Goldeneye and drinking Surge with my closest friends. Today’s kids will remember sitting in a room by themselves playing Fortnite with a headset.

I am rather dismayed how everyone in public looks like hammered shite. Unkempt. Dyed orange hair. Stupid tattoos. Obese. Slack jawed.

Humans have progressively become more superficial, our art and culture reflect that.

Corporations sell what people buy. We buy stupid shite.

we suddenly have all of popular content ever made, available at an instant on demand.

I've long thought that it can't be good for people to have so much on demand like it is now. There's hardly any waiting for things, people are missing the anticipation of waiting until next week to see their favorite show.

Seems like that would screw with people's internal rewards system. The social aspect has also been screwed with as people watch whenever they feel like it instead of together at the same time. Sports is the exception to this, maybe that's why they're so popular. Altogether it cheapens the intrinsic value of content, leading to an alienated, anomic, and vapid existence void of meaning.

Not just the culture but the way the world and the built environment looks. 2004-2024 largely looks, talks, sounds, and acts the same. Really 2010-2024 because by 2010 the smart phone was ubiquitous. Turn of tv news in 2004 and 2024 and truly, nothing has changed in content, mores, delivery.

But 84-04, 64-84, 44-64, 24-44 you might as well be on a different planet.

Totally agreed but what's the reason for everything stalling out?

Society evolving slower in a post 9/11 world? Stronger fiscal fears after 2008? The introduction of social media?

I’m 56 so not a Boomer. Just a different vibe back then. The internet has impacted it the most in my opinion. People were more social and cordial back then. Better sense of humor.

I agree with all of the above -- the lack of social skills, common courtesy, and sense of subtle humor (and sense of humor in general) are all but gone in younger gens. (hard to blame them much -- they lacked the larger groups of physical friends we hung out with and learned together.

(btw, my "Boomer" crack wasn't aimed at you -- it was in anticipation of the usual "BOOMER!!" squawking ;-)

I think we are beginning a political shift too which may change things. I think a larger chunk of young whites are going to stay socially liberal while young black, hispanics are a little more socially conservative. Would not be shocked in 30 to 40 years to see blacks back with republicans and a majority of whites voting dem.

Good call.

Social Media = Impossible-to-maintain or creation of close group relationships

Trying to determine Peak Culture is a bit trickier.

(I'd say late '70s / early 80s)
