I'm going to LA Christmas day (kids surprise trip to Disneyland) looking at Delta and American. Both have tickets around the same price. To do regular economy adds $50 (we think it's worth it to sit together and pick seats) Each is around $1100 for four people.

Cancel the trip now! We did this a few years ago and it was miserable. Supposedly, it is the busiest week of year. It was crowded af.

Sounds like you went cheap and booked super economy but want first class treatment.

This. I'm happy with the direction airline flight is going. You want high level service then you can pay high level prices. If you want low prices then you need to deal with low level service.

This isn't difficult.

I always pick my seat when I get the ticket. If two aren’t available together I planned too late.

To sell tickets as cheaply as they do they can’t have crew or aircraft sitting around doing nothing (at least not a lot) so when whatever cushion they have evaporates you get a delay.

I have had them seem to fudge blaming delays on weather though.

I am with the poster I am replying to - cheap as possible available, pay for anything over it is much better than paying for something I don’t care about.

I might splurge for a long flight but 2-3 hours I don’t care

Southwest is my least favorite of the big 4 American carriers.

If this was the DFW-BTR flight it’s actually a regional carrier and not American itself. In order to get a decent workday in, the crews on these one hour flights have to fly multiple legs per day and with pretty quick layovers. They will be a little more succeptable to “waiting on crew” delays.

SW8601 left from BTR this morning. I guess that's the LSU charter?

Southwest Boeing 737.

So you didn’t select your seats beforehand and want to complain? Sounds like basic economy.
I did select our seats before , I even selected and paid for the seats on the first row because I’m 6’3” and wanted the leg room but when we got our E tickets the seats weren’t listed. That’s when I called their 1-800 number and talked to Tim( aka Muhammad) he assured me that we had the front seats together. Also I seen where in this thread where I was cheap on the tickets. I’m not an OT baller but I paid around $800 for two tickets round trip

Likely bumped for a handicapped passenger (esp if bulkhead on regional jet). Or a Federal Air Marshal.

If American downgraded one, or both, of you to a non-premium/more expensive seat. Call or email them and they'll at minimum reimburse you for the difference.

Should have used that money to get a technical writing lesson.

You know why you never hear people complain about their business class tickets? Because they paid for it.

Reality is that the huge majority of those fliers don't pay for it.

Diminishing returns is a very real thing on domestic flights.

Monetization of the front cabin is real. Elite flyers aren't getting the comp upgrades like they were 5 years ago.

Agreed, but what percentage are individual fliers paying full fare OOP?

Which is worth noting in a conversation about getting what you pay for.

I sat next to a Netjet pilot on a flight into Memphis. Sounded like a pretty awesome gig and a great way to travel if you had OT Baller status.

There’s not really a “full-fare” first class anymore. It’s just a markup based off the current economy pricing at that time.

I see it all the time when I do get upgraded. I often sit next to someone who travels once a year and says “when I was booking it was only $220 more for first class!”

People can thank Southwest for the shittiness of other airlines now. They’ve cut costs to compete with southwest.

Southwest tends to be more expensive than AA/DL/UA, in my experience.

They're called P fares. Delta started it to sell more F seats and AA and UA have followed, which leaves fewer seats for upgrades, obviously.
