Holy frick they rotate out computers ever two years
That's just bad management. Most schools run computers until they wont turn on anymore

Blame tech companies and curriculum companies.
Holy frick they rotate out computers ever two years. Every class. iPads, promethium boards, the works.
How does the system force administrators to continue paying for new curriculum/software/resources? Is this by their own accord and poor decision making?

I would be willing to bet they have a higher percentage than we do of students and families that value education.

That and the cost of curriculum.
As a teacher, this is my biggest issue. The target never stops moving. They roll out a new curriculum and proclaim that “this is it”. Now, teach this material in this way using these resources, and those all important test scores will soar. A few years later, when they don’t, everything is scrapped, and a new “solution” is introduced at a cost of millions per district per subject area. Teachers, wipe the slate clean and start over. You have to do better. Rinse, repeat, until you want to pull your hair out.

I now work in engineering/construction and it is like a vacation compared to teaching.
You’re not allowed to say this on the OT (or anywhere else, really). All teachers do is complain, and they have a very easy job compared to private sector workers.

but they are often required to buy their own supplies nowadays, which seems unfair
What supplies do they have to have that they are buying?
I have a few family members that are teachers and usually it isnt stuff they need...more of just stuff they want.

The disparity between good districts and bad ones in the US probably dwarfs any other advanced nation, in no small part because of how districts are funded. Local control is so embedded here that I doubt it will ever change.
You find a place with high property values and a solid tax base and you will find good, high performing schools. It doesn't matter if it's in Texas, California, Florida, or wherever.
Per pupil average really doesn't tell you all that much and really isn't a good indicator of anything here

Not very much at all, unless you choose to. This complaint from teachers is GREATLY overstated.

1) Why do so many americans underestimate how generous our k-12 system is in terms of funding?
Because the results are widely shite, and the shitty areas get the most press, and a vocal component of educators complain about how bad they have it

2) If the k-12 system is so awash in dollars, why is teacher pay such a big issue? Why isn't this money finding its way into teachers' pockets?
Teachers pockets aren’t the ones needing to be greased.

3) Why do other countries get so much more bang for their bucks on primary and secondary education performance?
Demographics and culture

I've seen that usually it's just easier to buy it themselves....but if you are buying it just to make it easier for you....dont complain about it.

Teachers' unions in other industrialized countries are considerably more powerful than they are here

What plays a part in the difference is that not all schools have the same amount spent on them, since we use property tax as the defining factor.

I would bet we spend more per pupil in the poorer schools.

Exactly. This is like a framer complaining about being supplied a hammer, but then buys a nail gun to make it easier on him.

Special education services skews that statistic. We hire child specific aids and often have several in one classroom. Other countries don’t even attempt to educate kids with severe exceptionalities like we do.

It's not adjusted for COL within each state, though.

It's the lower 30% of the population that drag us down, not money.
And of course the political answer is throw more money at the issue.
