As a teacher, this is my biggest issue. The target never stops moving. They roll out a new curriculum and proclaim that “this is it”. Now, teach this material in this way using these resources, and those all important test scores will soar. A few years later, when they don’t, everything is scrapped, and a new “solution” is introduced at a cost of millions per district per subject area. Teachers, wipe the slate clean and start over. You have to do better. Rinse, repeat, until you want to pull your hair out.
So true and I’ll tell you why. Test scores are purely political. We do a WAY better job educating kids these days than 30 years ago.

Different governors like to have “their plan” to an extent so they can say, “See what test scores did under me?” If they scrap an assessment method and begin anew, the first years, the baseline data is low then teachers bring up scores as they become familiar with it, then wham. Back to square one.

All OECD nations have areas and districts that are worse off. Educational funding gaps exist in other major nations.

Many of our schools are treated as nothing but free day Care by scum parents, their deliquent spawns then need extra resources to fight them from bringing the entire class of peers down to the lowest denominator

I'm not sure how either of your responses applies to what I wrote. It was asserted that poorer students get more money spent on them here. This is demonstrably false (at least in the vast majority of states). Districts are heavily dependent on property taxes and ones in lower-income areas have less money. Not really rocket science yall.

You responded with a chart on how much each state spends on students on average (...ok?)

and then point out that other wealthy nations have high and low performing districts (almost certainly true, but again - ...ok?)

You came into the thread challenging the OP by saying that "average" is misleading, because there are gaps between districts and states in per pupil funding.

But these gaps exist in other nations, too. Most nations have similar local control of education expenditures dependent on property tax. So, it evens out when making international comparisons.

primary and secondary education in most OECD nations is generally under the control of the states and localities within the nation.

HERE YA GO BUDDY

quote:

To my knowledge, the U.S. is the only nation to fund elementary and secondary education based on local wealth. Other developed countries either equalize funding or provide extra funding for individuals or groups felt to need it. In the Netherlands, for example, national funding is provided to all schools based on the number of pupils enrolled, but for every guilder allocated to a middle-class Dutch child, 1.25 guilders are allocated for a lower-class child and 1.9 guilders for a minority child, exactly the opposite of the situation in the U.S., where lower-class and minority children typically receive less than middle-class white children. (p. 520)

Tldr: literally no other wealthy country funds education the way we do because it is so obviously and grossly unfair

Yes, politicians use test scores to scapegoat teachers so that they don’t have to point the finger where it needs to be pointed, parents. They never will do that, because it would cost them votes.

How does the system force administrators to continue paying for new curriculum/software/resources? Is this by their own accord and poor decision making

Our locals think anything technology is awesome and use it as a crutch every year when they want to raise taxes. In 7 years I saw so much waste it's disillusioning. I'm pretty sure that's not what was intended.

I’m pretty sure the Federal allocation is the same per child- and Title I only for “at risk” students- poor.

The local taxes pumped into each school district is another matter but it is what it is. That facet applies to any tax revenue for any given locality.
