It's why we homeschool. That and to watch my wife's soul die sucks. Our kids are happy and social and flourishing. If like to keep doing it as long as we can. It's a huge sacrifice but my evenings and weekends are so pleasant. We eat dinner together. Homework is done before I get home. Im Off every other Friday so we go do things before the weekend rush packs everything.

Taking $44k out of the budget is a kick in the guts. Won't lie.

What pushed us over the edge was when my daughter's teacher sent home everything we had for her to work quietly after she was done and waiting on everyone.

I was like wtf? She can't have a drawing pad can colors in the first fricking grade to just work and be quiet? She always finished first and would be farmed out to read to the other kids while the teacher typed away at her iPad. She came home and said she was tired of teaching and she just wanted to be a little kid and draw or read her library books.

We bailed, fo as long as we can go.

The problem is the misuse of funds.

Tldr: literally no other wealthy country funds education the way we do because it is so obviously and grossly unfair

Funding doesn't really seem to correlate with quality education

Parents are the main issue. You'll never fix that

Louisiana spends about middle of the road per pupil among the 50 states and our schools are consistently ranked in the bottom 5.

Alaska spends around 20k per student with capital funding included and is near the bottom

We have to have schools in every native village (and they're terribly expensive) and those villages are terrible performers

Utah spends about the least.

Many school district budgets are higher than their municipal budgets.

We really need a public option to keep costs down.

This is going to be controversial, but I have researched this and white and Asian Americans have test scores comparable to the smartest European countries and right below the smartest Asian countries.

The reality that nobody talks about is that American test scores are brought down by black and Hispanic Americans.

It’s just the cold hard truth.

Yes but the reason for this is poverty. If you are born into an ignorant family, you will only learn so much at school, if parents are not able to teach the kids then the kids end up just as uneducated.

This has nothing to do with what America spends on education. As someone mentioned, money is spent replacing computers that are not even used. These schools spend money on shite they don't need just to be able to say "we have..".

Ok

Don't think anyone would refute that, but what's your angle here?

So the school refuses to purchase these? Even paper? Or is it easier to just go buy it herself?

And how many expo markers and pens does she go thru? What's that cost a year $20?

Students can bring their on pencils.

You can get tissue and paper towel from custodians.

I would want to know how some of these other countries deal with their Special Education and those kids that are really Special Ed. I know that some kids have their own teacher/helper and these students will never truly pass their class. Do other countries count this in their education or is it under health care?

Jesus Christ you’re a disrespectful dick. Let me explain it to you. My wife teaches in what’s considered a “title 1” school, meaning that more than 50% or so of the students parents’ dual income is considered below the poverty line.

Also, imagine having to buy these thing necessities every couple weeks on your $45k-55k salary. Amongst other things because you actually want to do a good job and to do a good job you need supplies.

quote:

So the school refuses to purchase these? Even paper? Or is it easier to just go buy it herself?

Sometimes, the school purchases them, but not often. There’s no “supplies closet” like the schools you and probably went to. The demand is greater than the supply more often than not. So teachers/clubs hoard them.

Not to mention ALL supplies tend to WALK OFF at this type of school....get it?

Imagine being given 3-5 expo markers per quarter and told to the rest is up to you. And to make do. Then once a week one or more is stolen, lost, or misplaced by students.

quote:

And how many expo markers and pens does she go thru? What's that cost a year $20?

See the $45-55k salary part again and remember the reason you aren’t provided these things is because your principle has a “supplies” budget that he often spends on other pet projects that are meaningless.

This statement alone proves to me you have no idea what public schools are like nowadays. In some or many public schools, parents don’t supply their kids with pencils, pens, paper, binders, backpacks, much less help them with their homework or ensure they go to class. DUMB DUMB statement.

wrong again, but at this point not surprising
