It's much bigger than originally anticipated....

Business Report

The planned Amazon distribution facility at the site of the former Cortana Mall will be larger and will employ more workers than documents filed with the city-parish to date have indicated, according to sources familiar with the project.

Revisions to the original plans will be filed with the Planning Commission in the weeks to come and will increase the number of parking spaces to 1,750 from 1,250, which suggests the facility will employ as many as 3,500 workers instead of 2,500.

Employees will work 12-hour shifts so an increase of 500 parking spaces indicates 1,000 more workers will be on site each day.

Plan updates will also include an increase in the number of parking spaces for semitrucks, to 335 from 265, indicating the facility will handle more packages than originally planned.

Though the footprint of the 2.9 million-square-foot building will not change, revised plans will show the building will be 10 feet higher to accommodate the latest generation of robots, sources familiar with the plans tell Daily Report.

The revised plans will be filed after the Metro Council approves rezoning the property. That approval was expected to come last night, but the project was deferred at the developer’s request because sales have not been finalized on the seven parcels that comprise the site.

Officials with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and sources familiar with the project say the holdup is merely procedural and not indicative of a problem with the megaproject, which is expected to be transformative for the dying area around the former mall.

The land sales are currently being finalized and could close as soon as Friday.

In addition to the mall itself, the developer for Amazon, Seefried Properties, also has to acquire the various sites of the former anchor tenants and also solidify several cross servitude agreements with existing property owners.

The plans were also modified to include a larger employee parking area, higher ceilings, multiple levels, and more truck docks.

We’re down to about 5 companies running everything. Surely this will end well.

I know. It's terrible that the E-commerce giant that killed shopping malls is repurposing one so well.

I think workforce is going to be an issue there

I should say a hard working workforce that shows up every day.

Doesn't stop Exxon, Formosa, Albermarle, Honeywell, and all of the other major employers located in far worse neighborhoods. They are humming along quite well.

That means about 1500 actual jobs. You can generally cut the number of promised jobs in half on these things.

Except maybe a slight difference in pay and the quality of worker difference.

Seriously though, this is/should be celebrated as good news for Baton Rouge. I'm sure Gravy and others are still going to bitch and demand higher wages and shoot for some under the table stuff for themselves though.

Who knew that Baton Rouge would get one of the largest, most automated Amazon facilities in the world?

Only the OT would complain about up to 3500 jobs, not counting additional 3rd party shippers and logistics companies that would be supported by this.

Background check issues for many, upon many people who would be looking for fulfillment center jobs in that area.

The reason they built a mall there in the first place was because it was easy to access by the whole metro.

The same will apply to Amazon’s worker pool, which will likely draw from 4-5 parishes. The metro area can easily support this.

There isn’t a better realistic outcome for the Cortana property than this.

I wonder how bad traffic will be on Airline and in that area. Surprised they don’t build closer to the interstate like they are doing in Carencro/Lafayette.

I think the negativity is based on the reality that mitigation of prior losses in this state is considered the aspirational goal for successful economic development.

It’s much better now under JBE. Under Jindal they constantly announced corporate commitments that never materialized. At least the current administration set the bar at a level where nobody gets their hopes up.
