Amazon workers sleep in tents near firm’s Scottish depot to avoid travel costs

Amazon workers employed at a major warehouse in Scotland to help out during the Christmas rush have reportedly been camping out nearby.
According to an investigation by local newspaper The Courier, "at least three" tents have been spotted in the "bitterly cold" wilderness near Amazon's huge fulfilment centre near the town of Dunfermline in Fife. One worker, who did not wish to be named, described Amazon as a "poor employer," while local activists have described conditions in which employees are forced to work 60 hours a week with minimal breaks for just a shade over the minimum wage.
What's worse, warehouse staff, most of whom are working on a temporary basis to help cover the yearly glut of Christmas orders, are forced by the agency they work for to allegedly pay £10 per day to take specially arranged buses to work—costing them roughly one seventh of their daily after-tax pay, effectively bringing it below the UK's minimum wage of £7.20 per hour.

Wait, there's people that work at Amazon? I kinda always assumed it was run by robots.

Everyone beats up on Walmart's business practices. Amazon is probably 100 times worse.

Sucks. Scotland is beautiful but the economy / demographics is more or less West Virginia.

Feel like they don't understand what this statement truly means.

Walmart gets blamed for putting small businesses out of business. Amazon is destroying B&M retail both small and large. I know I will be counter argued with survival of the fittest and "hey I want to pay $.90 for each HDMI cable I buy" but overall the death of traditional retail is very bad for the US. B&M retailers employ a ton of people directly and indirectly. Retail staffers, construction workers, property management companies, utility workers, HVAC techs and so on.

Sounds like they're getting fricked by the third party agency they use to find jobs, not Amazon.

quote:Walmart literally donates millions to communities/hospitals/food banks and provides food and merchandise at cheaper prices. Walmart beat the government in responding with food/water/shelter to those impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Walmart recently raised hourly pay (voluntarily; billion dollar impact to income statement) for its associates and provides training academies for those who want to turn their Walmart job into a career.

You can knock Walmart for having cheaper items, but to say they suck since 1992 (SuperCenter concept not even invented yet) is ridiculous. America would be f'd if not for Walmart.
