A Citigroup analysis finds each box gets a $1.46 subsidy. It’s like a gift card from Uncle Sam.

But when a mail truck pulls up filled to the top with Amazon boxes for my neighbors and me, I do feel some guilt. Like many close observers of the shipping business, I know a secret about the federal government’s relationship with Amazon: The U.S. Postal Service delivers the company’s boxes well below its own costs. Like an accelerant added to a fire, this subsidy is speeding up the collapse of traditional retailers in the U.S. and providing an unfair advantage for Amazon.

Did you know 15 minutes could save you 15% or more?

subsidy

We have a contract with a home warranty company where we set the cost of inspections lower than our usual rate because they give us a good bit of work. I need to let my boss know we're subsidizing them.

I was referring to the Prime program specifically, not Amazon as a whole. An actual reading of the thread title seems to make that obvious.

I know a couple of former Amazon employees, they say it's awful.

I am all for anything that puts the USPS out.

For that matter, most of what the government does should be privatized anyway.

High C upset about Amazon.

Is it still worth to buy my Hue lighting system that I plan to use with Alexa? I know this newfound information will have resounding affect, High C being upset and all. Is there any chance the company goes bottom up though and I lose my money?

USPS gives private business bulk discounts all the time, not just Amazon

Not if it's below cost. It will generate more revenue, but it blows an enormous hole in the operating budget.

It actually indicates that Amazon finally showing profits is a smokescreen.

Is it really below cost? Because I doubt USPS is losing money on this deal.

This is not the same thing as lower than your cost.
