When I was 9 or 10 I saw a guy die on the Guadalupe River as a result of cliff jumping. He did a beautiful layout flip until he over rotated and hit the water at a 45 degree angle. Snapped his neck back. No bubbles or anything. We heard they found him that afternoon when we got done. The guy picking us up said, "Happens all the time. 2 weeks ago a youth minister died in front of his entire youth group like that."

This popped up today reminding me of it.

quote:

Last Saturday afternoon my 17 year old daughter and her friends were wake boarding on lake Georgetown. They chose to take a break from the boat, climb the south ledge cliffs across from the swim beach, and cliff jump. This is a common place for cliff jumping, especially when the lake levels are lower, kinda like they are right now. Normally the distance from the top cliff to the water is about 45’ but currently, with the water levels low, the distance is about 60’-65’. My daughter and her friends made the climb to the top cliffs and jumped, one at a time, boys went first and then my daughter went. As her feet left the ledge, she instantly knew she was off balance and that her body position was wrong. Moments later she collided with the water, upper legs and butt first, in a pseudo seated position. The sudden deceleration upon her impact with the water sent her knees into her chest, fracturing her sternum in 3 places. Her head failed to stop with the rest of her body which caused a sheering injury between levels C-7 and T-1 of her spine. My daughter had broken her neck. Her friends quickly came to her aid and assisted her onto the boat. Thankfully, my daughter had not severed her spinal cord or suffered any serious neurological damage, but she was far from “OK”. Later, after several days in the hospital, she was fitted with a full upper torso and cervical spine brace that she’ll wear for a minimum 3 months, to prevent any cervical spine movement or disruption of tissues in the spinal canal. The doctors said that their hope is that scar tissue will form around the damaged vertebra, creating a capsule of sorts, and add stability to the damaged spinal area, allowing my daughter to properly heal, and lead a normal life.

I pray that my daughter’s story will prevent an future cliff jumping injuries at Lake Georgetown..

PLEASE.... Don’t allow your child to cliff jump. Even if signs aren’t posted to prevent it. Cliff jumping is dangerous and it’s illegal at the lake. My daughter made a mistake, a bad choice that nearly cost her her life. Please talk to your teenagers about the dangers of cliff jumping before they head to the lake this summer.

This photo was taken as my daughters feet left the cliff.

So as you young whipper snappers hit the lakes this summer, be smart. One stupid choice could change you and or your loved one's lives forever.

Damn that sucks. My mom (no pics) always told me a story about how she was down at the Lakefront in Nola in the late 70s and some dude dove in headfirst. Guess it wasn't as deep as he thought. Broken neck.. died immediately

Tubing the Guadalupe in 1999, I jumped of that really high bridge that has a sign saying something like "It's a felony to jump from the bridge."
All I got was a nice river water enema but looking back, it was VERY stupid.

People(mostly dumb drunk young men) have been maimed and died doing that shite for years on the Guadalupe and around the word. I am terrified of my kids doing something so stupid.

I know the cliff on the Guadalupe you're likely referring to. Jumped it a few times. We always thought the most dangerous part was the climb up, being soused of course.

Diving in unknown water and rope swings. Equally as dangerous.

Like fricking a hooker without a rubber. You only get that thrill from so few things in life.

PLEASE...Don't allow your child to drive, or swim, or walk around without sunscreen, or go out after dark, or ride bikes. It's all dangerous because people get hurt doing these things.

My college roommate was a professional cliff diver on the Red Bull circuit. I think the highest they did was 98 feet.

He got hurt 2 years in a row in Monte Carlo. Keep in mind he was a pro. First year he over-rotated a bit and broke his tail bone. The next year his foot jutted out and the femur separated from his hop socket by a few inches.

Cliff diving is dangerous for those who know how to do it.

Then again...

quote:

On the night of 24 March 1944, 21-year-old Alkemade was one of seven crew members in Avro Lancaster B Mk. II, DS664,[1] of No. 115 Squadron RAF. Returning from a 300 bomber raid on Berlin, east of Schmallenberg, DS664 was attacked by a German Ju 88 night-fighter, [Note 1] caught fire and began to spiral out of control. Because his parachute had gone up in flames and thus was unserviceable, Alkemade jumped from the aircraft without it, preferring to die by impact rather than burn to death. He fell 18,000 feet (5,500 m) to the ground below.

His fall was broken by pine trees and a soft snow cover on the ground. He was able to move his arms and legs and suffered only a sprained leg. The Lancaster crashed in flames, killing pilot Jack Newman and three other members of the crew. They are buried in the CWGC's Hanover War Cemetery.

Alkemade was subsequently captured and interviewed by the Gestapo, who were initially suspicious of his claim to have fallen without a parachute until the wreckage of the aircraft was examined. (Reportedly, the Germans gave Alkemade a certificate testifying to the fact.)[2] He was a celebrated prisoner of war, before being repatriated in May 1945.

On January 3, 1943, his Flying Fortress—B-17F-27-BO, 41-24620, nicknamed "snap! crackle! pop!"[1]—part of the 360th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group,[2] was on a daylight bombing run over Saint-Nazaire, France, when German fighters shot off a section of the right wing, causing the aircraft to enter a deadly spin. This was Magee's seventh mission.

Magee was wounded in the attack but managed to escape from the ball turret. His parachute had been damaged and rendered useless by the attack, so he leapt from the plane without one, rapidly losing consciousness due to the altitude. He fell over four miles before crashing through the glass roof of the St. Nazaire railroad station. The glass roof shattered, mitigating the force of Magee's impact. Rescuers found him on the floor of the station.

Magee was taken as a prisoner of war and given medical treatment by his captors. He had 28 shrapnel wounds in addition to his injuries from the fall: several broken bones, severe damage to his nose and eye, lung and kidney damage, and a nearly severed right arm.

Magee was liberated in May 1945 and received the Air Medal for meritorious conduct and the Purple Heart. On January 3, 1993, the 50th anniversary of the attack, the people of St. Nazaire honored Magee and the crew of his bomber by erecting a 6-foot-tall (1.8 m) memorial to them.

Back in high school and college, we used to jump off the I-10 bridge near Henderson at Butte Larose. Had one friend who used to do flips off of it. I hit is an odd position once and it knocked me almost unconscious. That was the last time I did it.

That's funny b/c we came down from Dallas that Memorial Day Weekend in 99. We were staying at my now best bud's Mom's house about 1/2 mile from the Guadalupe.

He's a Messican-American who went to New Braunfels High School(Geaux Unicorns).

At happy hour a week before, he invited us to go "TUBING ON THE RIVER" in his home town of New Braunfels.

You Chalmation motherfricker don't know shite.

ETA: You getting us some Pelicans Tix?

In my twenties I jump off one of the cliffs on tubing trip (not sure of the river). Didn't quite get the jump off I wanted. Landed too close to the bank. When I hit the water my feet went out and arse slammed on the bottom. Swam away, buy fractured my L4 and L5. My damn back hurts everyday.
