Hendrik "Hendri" Coetzee (c. 1975 – 7 December 2010) was a South African outdoorsman and author.[4][5] He was killed after being taken by a crocodile in December 2010.[4][6]

Coetzee gained prominence in 2004 leading a Nile River source-to-sea expedition, following in the path of John Goddard's expedition.[7][8][9][10] The expedition set off from Lake Victoria in Uganda on 17 January, reaching Khartoum on 25 March[11] and the Mediterranean Sea at Rosetta on 21 May.[12] The purpose of the trip was to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in the region in partnership with CARE.[13] Following claims that the expedition had not begun from the true source of the Nile, Coetzee's party undertook a further journey from Kagera to Lake Victoria in April 2005, adding 750 km to the 6700 km they completed in 2004.[14]

Coetzee was leader of an expedition going from the source of the White Nile into the Congo at the time of the attack. The trip was the first-of-its-kind kayaking expedition from the White Nile and Congo rivers into the Congo to explore the Ruzizi and Lualaba Rivers. The two other men on the trip, Americans and also experienced kayakers, were documenting unexplored whitewater and development projects in the region.[4][15]

A memorial service for Coetzee was held on 28 January 2011.[1]

The documentary short film Kadoma about Coetzee was released in 2011.[16] His story was also featured in 2022 as an episode on National Geographic's Edge of the Unknown With Jimmy Chin.[17]

Been more than one dumbass killed like that.

the wrong board to ask would be the music board, because that board is predominantly concerned with music, and this question is about kayaking and alligators.

Clearly a reference to a Louisiana based message board not the OT in particular

Some wierd link from 2004 about alligator attacks in the US

My math skills tell me you are at greater risk of getting molested by your dentist while simultaneously getting struck by lightning. I took remedial math like 3 times at LSU, so I know what Im talking about.

Yea, but if you stay away from gator infested water. There is a zero % chance of getting ate by a gator.

I like those odds much better.

No but it’s no big deal.

However kayaking with your dog who then falls in the water and you’re trying to pull him back in without swamping yourself, after seeing a large gator 20-30 feet away….frick That.

I've kayaked many a time in gator ridden waters in LA. They don't want to mess with you. The majority of the time you have no idea they are even there unless you remain still and quiet. Otherwise they just stay below the surface

I never thought much about gators fishing as a kid around Shreveport. In fact I had never seen a gator in the wild. I trespassed all the ponds south of town. One day I was hip deep in a great pond and an alligatorcame up about 25 yards from me. Probably bout 9-10 feet long, minimal. I ignored it for about 15 min but then I started thinking about this long stringer of fish I had tied to my belt, and the fact that he could beat me back to shore if me decided he wanted them (along with his catch on the other end). I left to a smaller pond. As soon as I walked up, a gator popped up in the middle. Didn't get any bites and left shortly to a really small pond....another gator. After all the years I had been fishing with not seeing one and then seeing 3 in a row..... I decided fate was warning me, for whatever reason, to stop fishing and go home. I did.

You're probably in more danger From almost everything else people worry about. Dog attacks in particular.

Since 1685 there have been 42 fatalities from Alligator attacks and one of those fatalities was the result of an infection from the water in which the attack occurred.

in 2021 alone there were 43 dog-related fatalities in the US.

Since 2010 45 bear attack fatalities in North America.

Since 1990 47 fatal snakebites in the US.

Florida’s rivers which contain gators/crocs.

Important thing is telling them apart for each other.

One, gators, you see later. Whereas crocs you only see afterawhile.

I’ve played in these rivers in Louisiana all my life. Been in the water with them just a few feet away - no issues. But there are a couple of important rules: stay away from their nest or Mama gator will try to kill you - and keep pets and kids away from the bank after dark.
