Baton Rouge Democratic Rep. Ted James has said he sponsored the legislation in response to the Sterling shooting, which prompted a summer of discontent with widespread protests.

quote:

Legislation stemming from the Baton Rouge police shooting of Alton Sterling last summer cleared the state Senate Friday afternoon and now goes to the governor.

House Bill 277 would require all peace officers to annually complete a minimum of 400 hours of basic core curriculum training and a minimum of 20 hours of in-service training to remain accredited. It specifically requires training in de-escalation, bias policing recognition, handling mentally ill persons, and crisis intervention.

quote:

James noted that a $100,000 legal settlement approved recently by Baton Rouge officials for arrested protesters was proof that changes are needed. The federal class action lawsuit alleged that law enforcement officials wrongfully arrested 92 protesters and used excessive force during demonstrations held after the Sterling shooting.

Can we get the same requirement for single, able-bodied recipients of government handouts?

I'm surprised he's not demanding that only black officers be allowed to respond to 911 calls in NBR.

This guy is one of Broome's race posse.

I said from day 1 that this settlement was opening Pandora's Box. This was such a stupid decision.

So 10 1/2 weeks? Over 2 months... 1/6 of the year... to this "training"

Wow.

Pay sucks.

Not respected by over 1/2 BR population.

Racist and non-supportive Mayor.

Constantly scrutinized.

And black leaders don't want BR City Police officers to live outside of the EBR parish.

Tell me exactly why ANYONE would want to be a police officer working for the city of Baton Rouge?

There's a reason the number of new officers is down 50% this year (pro rated)

Great Idea! A new $.05/gallon gas tax with a another 1% in sales tax should cover the costs of not having police officers on the streets.

400 hours annually

Who will pay for the training and pay the officers to attend? Also, where are they going to find additional officers if they will all attend 10 weeks of training per year or will Baton Rouge have to come up with additional funding for all the OT that will no doubt have to be paid for?
Guaran-fricking-teed Ted James could not answer those questions.
All of this money to train officers to do exactly what they did to Sterling in that situation.

To be paid by BR tax payers, with funds going to BR politicians and their associates.
