It's not necessarily to make it stronger in the event of crashes, it's to keep it from wobbling and flapping when you're driving down the highway and air is blowing across the edge of it.

When I'm keying your car, that flat spot is a convenient area for me to sign my work, again using a key to etch my initials into the paint.
