Yet if gators were extinct the child would still be here. People say gators fill a critical need in the ecosystem, yet I'm old enough to remember when there were not gators and don't recall any environmental catastrophes. Any role gators fill will be filled with other scavengers who are not apex predators and pose no threats to humans. Hunt them to extinction. We almost did one time. We should complete it this time.

You do realize farming/trapping gators is a huge money making industry for Louisiana?

Louisiana has more alligators than Florida. But almost 20 million fewer people so you don’t hear about stories like this nearly as much.

That and most don't live within 100 yards of gators in Louisiana unless they are on a houseboat in the Atchafalaya Basin. Florida has little ponds at many neighborhoods with gators in them, and walkways around the pond.

I'd guess most gators in Louisiana are south of the intracoastal in marsh where people don't live in marsh. Not sure if just me, but the gators I see fishing in the marsh are always smaller. Like sub 6 ft. The gators I see caught in freshwater like some in the Red River or MS River floodplain in Cenla/NLA are up to 16 ft.

I don’t ascribe to the knee jerk overreactions like eradicate all gators, but they do seem overpopulated. Rivers, lakes and bayous all over they’re very common to see and in good numbers too.

from the advocate
quote:

Gusanders said he and others involved in the search noticed that the two alligators involved in Bryan's death seemed to stick together. Authorities believe they were being fed scraps by some residents of the neighborhood, he said.

also
quote:

New Orleans police confirmed Wednesday that Bryan’s mother, Hilda Vasquez, had been served with a search warrant and her phone confiscated as part of the unclassified death investigation. Her criminal history is under review as part of the wider investigation by police and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, according to Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick

Name them

It would be a lot easier for you to name a role the alligator plays in the ecosystem that isn't filled by another animal....other than preying on humans.

Fine. Let people farm them, but every one of them outside the wire should be killed.

Just how many people need to be killed to justify eradicating them: 10, 50 100, 1000?

do you have any idea how long modern crocodilians have inhabited this planet? hint: its a number between 80- 85 followed by six zeros. do you know how many humans are killed each year in north america by the american alligator? hint: its a number between zero and 1, followed by no zeros.

man i understand your distress that this child was the victim of a natural predator, but your argument is is just silly.

Like Florida, we have wayyyy too many gators

I remember when I was in college they were listed as an endangered species. The alligator hunting season was only two weeks and each hunter could only get tags for two gators. My roommate used to try to get me to go out there with him so that he could get two tags for me and keep the gators. The skin (underbelly) was valuable. I think he said he got $2,000 per belly.

Fine to kill one 6 ft or larger- $0
4-6 ft 25$ per (except in city limits)

Heavy fines for feeding the gators (yes, even fish, duck carcasses)

If they leave the reserve, they should be open season. frick em. We have zero use for them. Killing 1000 would hurt the species. They'll be here when humans are gone

I asked you to name the other scavengers who are not predators and pose no threat to humans to fill the void of gators.

BTW , gators aren’t scavengers

Well Marsh Island and the Pearl River Delta have the largest alligators. Both almost exclusively marsh.

Meanwhile, honeybees kill around 100 people a year in the US. We better get the wasp spray and start wiping them out.

I’m in Maurepas on a canal off Blind River. There is a cut off of it known as the “short cut” and I’ve hit it just as the sun set a few times. There are a shite ton of gators right there.
