He killed 2 people. How is that serial? They put that on there for clicks.

99% of plea deals are made after a person pleads not guilty. The other 1% pleads to a bill of information typically to get out a jail because they can’t make bail and the offer doesn’t involve jail.

At what point does someone become a serial killer exactly?
Didn’t this guy just shoot two people in a scope of a few days? Seems like a spree killer.

If that’s the only criteria then BR is full of “serial killer” thugs

FBI defines a serial killer as a person that kills 3 or more people with a cooling off period between killings (not a spree killer).

Right. And there is typically a profile that killers like to follow to pick out targets.

if so, then I think by law you must plead not guilty and have it go to trial

Typically a serial killer has no motive, kills three or more people with a fair amount of time b/w each killing, and follows a particular pattern when he perpetrates the killings. Also in most cases victims are selected based on similar characteristics. E.g. Bundy, Boston Strangler
Spree killers kill two or more people in one or more instances with little down time, and there may or may not have a motive, and the killings are typically done at random. So tuesday, he may kill 4 people at random, then 2 weeks later he may kill three more people. E.g. The DC Snipers
The last classification is Mass Murderer. They usually kill 4 or more people in one instance. E.g. Columbine, UT Sniper, etc.
This guy seems more like a typical murderer with racial motives, so idk that he fits any of the above descriptions. If any of them, he most closely resembles a spree killer

How do you figure? If that’s the case then every slapdick TPOS who guns down multiple people is a “serial killer” and there are tens of thousands and them in every crime infested city in the US.
There’s more to a serial killer than just killing multiple people. There’s methodology.

Usually for arraignment, you plead not guilty. It will either mean you plan on taking it to trial or working on a plea deal. It's not often people in cases like this plea guilty at their arraignments.

The public defender can wring the system for a ton of fees before settling right before trial.
