Looking for opinions ( and boy I know I will get some)… from people that have knowledge on the guidelines they put out for cars with awd .. and tire wear tolerance….

I have an old Audi a7 and in general always kept the tires changed at same time .. had two blow due to an incident once and changed all four because they were half worn already..

I recently purchased a Honda crv awd also..

So what are opinions of maintaining your awd cars tires to keep them similar in wear …and if a blowout on one.. do you care.. does it really matter ??? This is all wheel drive in new cars with computers and not old school FWD..
Thanks

Rotate them when you get your oil changed

I treat them the same as anything else. Ideally, all tires match and are worn evenly. At worst, I’ll make sure the fronts match and the rears match.

3/32 is what i always hear as standard. But it really depends on the vehicle.

GX baws says 4/32 i fine front to rear.

Only subaru seems to care about this.

My current car is AWD. Needed a new tire due to flat, tires have about 20k miles on them. Tire place told me it didnt matter, only replaced the 1.

I am specifically asking that if you have a few years on the tires and have a blow out.. the new one you will put on will have significantly more tread then the other three . If your tires vary in wear and have different wear .. according to some guidelines this impacts the awd monitoring and and cause problems with the computers…and cause the awd mechanical/electrical stuff to be damaged.

Isn't the AWD monitoring system supposed to monitor the individual wheels and adjust accordingly?
Seems like that's the whole purpose for it.

The notion that if you have one tire with 1/4” at most more tread than the others causing issues with awd systems is laughable. Most awd systems will only engage if it senses tire slip, and isn’t on all the time.

If the tire height was that much of an issue anytime a tire was low on air pressure it would do damage to the drivetrain.

Same size/brand is more important than wear.

Stay with same speed ratings, also.

This plus roads are so shitty and rough that it would set off sensors all the time if they are that delicate

Really depends on the vehicle.

For example, the GTR has one of the more advanced AWD control systems with a computer controlled clutch that can send power on demand to the front tires. Even that system needs to be within 3%. Most AWD cars just have a center diff that handles the mismatch in speed. It has limits on how much it can take. I worry more about burning up that diff than the computer freaking out.

At the doctor yesterday, the nurse was telling me she had to trade her AWD Hihhlander in because she's had to buy 4 sets of tires already.

Does AWD cause tire wear or is she an idiot? I have 3 4WD vehicles, none AWD.

Not a noticeable amount form my experience. I'm on my second set of tires on my GX with 90k miles.

It does matter. If I have to replace one tire while the rest are pretty good, i'll just choose to have the new tire shaved down so it matches the tread depth of the others.

For regular maintenance I rotate every 5k miles to keep the tire wear similar on all tires.

Audi also. Had my car on a road trip and had a flat. Got the car towed to the tire store and they said I needed to replace all 4. I said no but he said what others have said; that it messes up the computers in the car with uneven tread wear. I said replace the flat and that's it.
