All "Deep South" metro areas (MSAs) ranked by 2023 population (according to U.S. Census)

Here are the population figures and population trends/changes from 2020 to 2023 according to the U.S. Census Bureau for all designated MSAs in the traditional "Deep South" states (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina) and where each metro area ranks population wise amongst each other as well as nationally among the 387 federally designated MSAs in the country.
Perhaps the most interesting trend looking at the numbers is how the rate of population growth from one state to the next increases on an almost linear scale as you go west to east from LA to MS to AL to GA to SC. Don't know if that's just a coincidence but it's interesting nonetheless.
Population estimates are listed from largest to smallest based on 2023 U.S. Census metro area population figures along with each MSA's 2023 population in bold. Where each MSA ranks nationally population wise is in parenthesis and each metro area's % change in population from 2020 to 2023 is listed as well:

Nola could be second if they didn’t split off Hammond, Slidell-mandeville-Covington areas.

I mean, sure, but those places are pretty far from NOLA

Today i learned that Greenville SC and Birmingham are both larger population wise than NOLA.. i had no idea.. but i agree with poster above who said Mande/Cov should most definitely be counted as NOLA metro .

South Carolina is not the Deep South. It’s just Florida’s first cousin.

Most of the violence in South Carolina these days is between Ohio transplants and New Jersey transplants fighting over the corner unit of an apartment complex that mysteriously appeared overnight.

I’m a little dubious of those numbers, I think they’re pretty generous
Hattiesburg does not have 150k people, for example. No frickin way

NOLA losing close to 5%. Yikes. Not surprised, but sad to see what an outlier it is.

Do you know what metro area means?
Posted on 6/19/24 at 7:53 pm to NawlinsTiger9
Yeah and if you add the Northshore to NOLA metro it becomes 2nd place on the list after only Atlanta .. very weird that they counted Ham/Man/Cov/Slidell as its own “city” on that list .

And Birmingham would be way down the list if they didn't get to keep claiming towns/cities that no longer claim them and are, by pretty much every standard, their own cities now.
And this shite is getting old:

Jackson doesn't even have 150,000 residents.

Uh, they are their own cities, but they are closer and more integrated with Bham than the Northshore cities are with New Orleans.

Absolutely, you don’t see me questioning the Gulfport/Biloxi number do you? Because they sure as hell don’t have 400k people. METRO AREA Re: HBG, Forrest and Lamar Counties had over 140k according to the 2020 census.
